Official Statement-AZ Tourism Industry: "Deeply Concerned About The Repercussions Of 1070"

Official Statement:
The Tourism Industry is deeply concerned about the repercussions that will result from the debate
around Senate Bill 1070. Arizona tourism is currently in a very fragile state of recovery and the negative
perceptions surrounding this legislation are tarnishing Arizona’s image and could easily have a
devastating effect on visitation to our state.

The Tourism Industry was not part of the development of this legislation, but unfortunately is certain to
experience the unintended consequences of the economic backlash. As we’ve seen many times in recent
years, tourism is being used as leverage for a political issue with no direct connection to our industry.
Instead of driving our state’s economy even further into decline and punishing the 200,000 families who
rely on tourism for their livelihoods, we proudly ask all Arizonans’ to support the diverse and global
workforce that comprises the Tourism Industry and to invite friends, family, associations and businesses
to visit and experience Arizona firsthand.

I wasn't planning a trip to Arizona anytime soon, anyway, so I can't claim to be a part of the boycot, but I'm glad to see that 1070 is causing some discomfort. I understand the tourism industry didn't develop the legislation, but their representatives did. Maybe its' time to change representatives.

4. my husband and I were talking about this today, as he goes to the Grand Canyon every summer

He's always talking about how many foreign tourists there are at the canyon.

You think these tourists at the Grand Canyon will be flying into AZ with the threat that they could be under suspicion
the minute they get off the plane? You think they are going to spend money on air fare, hotel, ect....just to be harassed?

No -- freaking-- way. They will find somewhere else to go...

This will be rescinded and you will hear the extreme right scream to high heaven, mostly because of them meddling Mexicans... mark my words. (Oh and from talking to Mom, Calderon is gonna speak in front of the US Congress, and guess what will be part of the speech?)

9. The US is already seen as "unfriendly" to foreign visitors

thanks to Homeland Security & how people are treated throughout Immigration & Customs. However, the foreigners I've spoken with think Americans in general are pleasant & helpful. So, all it's going to take is for a few Europeans, say from Spain, to get treated like shit while sight-seeing for this to *REALLY* backfire. I've never been asked to show my passport in foreign countries, except upon entering & also checking in to my hotel, so they really are going to be shocked & offended to be treated like dirt (& possibly arrested).

8. Part of my income depends on tourism in Arizona. I support the boycott

Unlike many of the greedy bastards in this country who can't bear the thought of living without one or two of their many millions of $$$, I would feel too guilty to sleep comfortably at night if I put my own selfish little desire for a few extra bucks ahead of the NEED of so many of my fellow Arizonans -- permanent, visitor, documented or otherwise -- to live without fear of this horrible horrible law turning their lives upside down.

It's truly sad that Jan Brewer and that asshole Russell Pearce are such miserable bigots that they would knowingly put the rest of us in financial jeopardy. It's truly sad that only through financial pressure -- indeed, extortion -- may this obscene law be overturned. Shame shame on those Arizonans who support it.

Short-sighted and selfish, pompouse, racist, hypocritical -- are there any nasty adjectives I've forgotten? -- Brewer and Pearce and their colleagues are securely insulated from the negative effects. THEY DON'T CARE. Remember that: THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT ARIZONA. They care only about themselves, and their mean-spirited xenophobic racist friends.

11. Just one slight correction, they care about white rule

which is slipping with every passing generation. After all, and they know it... this is the LAST generation of majority white populations... so the power structure is shifting under their feet, and damn it, they are scared.
