Today is Workers' Memorial Day and labor organizations around the country are taking pause to honor members who have died or fallen ill while on the job. The main focus of many of the ceremonies will be dedicated to the 29 coal miners who lost their lives in West Virginia earlier this month. Every year workers die both on the job or succumb to illnesses developed due to working in unsafe conditions. For example, it is estimated that nearly 3,000 workers a year are affected by asbestos exposure which has been linked to the development of mesothelioma in the lungs. Today marks the twenty-first Workers Memorial Day. April 28, 1971 is the date when the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect in the United States.
