Senate Dems plan all-nighter to push GOP on Wall Street reform

Senate Democratic leaders are planning for an all-night session to put more pressure on Republicans to allow a debate on Wall Street reform.

Republican senators voted for the third time in three days on Wednesday to block an effort to bring a reform bill to the floor.

Democratic aides said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) plans to keep the Senate in session overnight to force Republicans to reconsider their opposition to the Democratic legislation.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said leaders had decided to hold a nighttime session to highlight GOP opposition to the Wall Street reform bill.

1. Great, wonderful, I applaud them.

Why the hell didn't they do this for a strong HCR bill instead of letting the Rs water it down with compromises before walking out the door entirely?

And BTW, I think the reform legislation is far too weak. We need at least a full return to Glass-Steagal plus a cap on the size of any bank.

2. The Caucus Was Split On HIR Vs. This Bill...

You had Blanche Lincoln fighting any meaningful health reform bill but she's all aboard on this one...her polls tell her this is so. Same for everyone but Ben Nelson (who only listens to Warren Buffett). This tactic allows Democrats to frame the GOOP (rightfully) as the "Party of Wall Street" where they couldn't do a simple bumper sticker with health care.

Welcome back to Kibuki Theater...we're sure to see a lot of these tactics in the weeks ahead as this bill first has to get to debate, then deal with ammendments then a final floor vote then back to the House and conference and a final vote in both Houses...the Democrats strategy is to dare the GOOP to drag this thing out at their own peril.


As far as being weak...I agree and it will be interesting what happens when ammendments are presented and need 51 votes to become part of the bill. There's a restoration of Glass-Steagall in there as well as tighter regulations. Some are sure to be bargaining chips, but the debate should be very enlightening.
