2. He was great, as always.
He announced a winner for his contest which was to try to find the penalty in the HCR Bill for Insurance Corps who refuse to cover people who are sick. It was revealing to learn that the fine is not included in the bill itself, his researchers went through the entire bill trying to find it.

The winner found, as did MM's own researchers, buried in the bill, a reference to an old law dated 1942 where they were directed to find out what the fine would be.

Apparently if an Insurance Corp refuses to cover a person with cancer, they will have to pay $100.00 a day. So, depending on how sick the person is, the Corp can calculate how much they would save by paying the fine as opposed to covering the patient.

But to find that information took a team of researchers and others around the country who were aware of his contest. No law should be that convoluted. Laws that effect the everyday lives of citizens should be easily understood.

I wish we had more like him the media who are the ones who should be doing this kind of investigative work. But since we don't, thanks MM for all you do.

3. Perhaps that would be in 1942 dollars ....
...that is the equivalent value of $100 in 1942 as expressed in the dollars of today? How much would that be?

4. I don't know. But that's the problem as MM pointed. That there
isn't much clarity about these things. How strong are the enforcement mechanisms when it practically takes an army to find out the answer to just that one question?

I'm sure most bills are written that way, pointing to other laws eg. And I really believe it is done on purpose to make it as oblique as possible and as difficult as possible for the average person to understand.

Good for him for trying to get some answers though. Most citizens are not, nor should they have to be, lawyers. But your question is a good one. Is that amount in 1942 dollars? I'm sure if it's not clear, the Ins. Ind. will make sure that it is.
