Hare Calls on Massey Energy CEO to Put Bonuses Toward Memorial Fund for Victims’ Families
WASHINGTON, DC-Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL), a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, today released the following statement in response to an ABC News report that Massey Energy paid its CEO Don Blankenship more than $2 million in bonuses as a reward for safety, even as its mines were piling up record citations and infractions.
“Today’s ABC News report that Massey Energy paid its CEO safety-related bonuses as the company was racking up scores of citations and infractions is a slap in the face to the families of the 29 miners who perished at Upper Big Brach Mine. It continues a perverse and unconscionable pattern of corporations rewarding top executives for failing to do their job. Mr. Blankenship should take the millions of dollars he received in bonuses and start a memorial fund for the victims’ families. Any other Massey employee responsible for safety that received similar bonuses should do the same. Enough is enough.”
