I just got the call from my boss - they don't want to lose me or my coding skills so I am free to work from home no matter where I live. So I am packing up and heading from Ohio to California.
Our main reason for moving: My wife's Parkinson's. Now she will be close to her family who can help her out, and she can see all her friends instead of talking to them on the phone. Her folks have a rent house so we have a place to go.
We will be in Bakersfield. We have been here in Ohio 9 years, and while it has been good for us as I noted in other threads the last two years have been a living hell.
I can't help but cry a little as I am writing this. I live next door to dad, and I can go over to his house and see mom's urn anytime I want. For some reason that means a lot to me. I haven't told dad yet, I am going over there this evening and let him know and tell the old broad goodbye (not sure where that term originated, but mom always used it....)
This is a big chapter in my life closing, and another one opening. I won't be coming back to Ohio - I shouldn't have the last time. Mom even told me - stay out there in California, you have a life you enjoy and when I die it won't be so hard on you. But she was happy I came back, and so was I. Mom is all gone, and the issues with my kids here is over. Time to move on.
Hard to leave a place you spent most your life in. But most my friends are dead, my kids will probably never see me again (and I have not seen 2 of the 3 in 9 years).
Politics: I want to get more involved out there. Kern county has a lot of red in it, although my mother-in-law is an elected Dem there. I used to be a lot more active in the community when I lived in the high desert, and it is high time I got my butt back in gear. So if you are in Kern county and want to do some meetups and such, hit me up!
Moving ought to be interesting, I will be a truck with my two small dogs and our pet bird. It will be like noah's ark on wheels.
At any rate - I just wanted to share some good news in my life instead of always sharing the bad.
