WH "atwitter" over Queen's visit but Poppy didn't make the guest list
....Anybody who had not already received one of the elegant gold-rimmed invitations (hand-penned by a calligrapher and then engraved) apparently knew that it would be gauche to ask. Still, the exclusivity has created some awkward moments, as when the social secretary bumped into former President Bush, who was not on her list, in the West Wing.

“He was making jokes, and then he said, ‘You know what, that is the hottest ticket in town,’ ” she said, adding, “If he wanted to come, he could have.”

So 41 could have been included in "not only the social event of the year, but also of the entire Bush presidency." -IF he'd been "gauche" enough to ask.

It's just a stupid dinner, but what a strange family.

Fun fact (in an etiquette smack down sort of way)-

"...By Mr. Fleischer’s telling, Mr. Bush once did drink water out of his bottle at a United Nations lunch, prompting Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to give the president a gentle hint by pouring water in his glass."

2. You would think that if your son was the President...
your name would be automatically on guest list of such events. And when your father is a past President would make it a double.
I think this is a sign of the bigger picture, how strained the relationship between the elder and son really is.

3. First thought I had was 'bad blood', in them and between them.
I wonder if Poppy has been critical of his dimson. That'd be refreshing.

13. Then there's his propensity for vomiting on world leaders.
And honestly, if George were your son, wouldn't you be retching on a regular basis?

7. Maybe Poppy declined the offer. He and Babs were embarrassed enough
in 1991 when W was invited to their State Dinner for the Queeen.

8. It could be Poppy's health
He may not be able to do hours of standing and sitting upright.

We could be in for another round of Repub and media presidential necrophilia.

O joy.

9. It so amuses me that Bush* will have to stifle himself... be
deferential and on "best behavior" knowing that the entire British royal family (rightfully) thinks he is an ignorant bloody boor. I'm betting Poppy did not want to bear witness to that (and was probably afraid of his own Quaker Oats "queen" getting into it with Elizabeth II.

10. Poppy Bush is going to the Queen's dinner at the embassy.
Apparently, the Queen is hosting a dinner after the Bush's dinner at the British embassy or some such place. 41 and Barbara Bush are invited to that.

If I were George H.W., I would not want to witness W's dinner. Dinner with the Queen is more than enough.

14. oh to be a fly on the wall.............I thought this part was funny
Mr. Bush’s moniker for his father, 41, is well known, and he will surely need no etiquette guide to warn him away from referring to the queen as II.

I bet he calls her II................HA!

15. "You're doing a great job, Queenie."

I don't want to enable the paparazzi, but I wish someone with a camera phone could document this no doubt dignified occasion.

I bet Bush falls asleep.
