We can't afford ______________ (fill in the blank)
Edited on Thu May-13-10 09:31 AM by unhappycamper
I hear it all the time.

We can't afford health care.

We can't afford to regulate the Wall Street casino.

We can't afford to take care of our veterans.

We can't afford to regulate Big Oil.

We can't afford to get out of Afghanistan.

We can't afford to fix our roads and bridges.

We can't afford to pay teachers, firemen and policemen.

We can't afford Social Security.

We can't afford our libraries.

We can, however, afford to piss away $200,000 a minute in the sandbox. And we can afford all those fancy new toys Boeing, GE, Raytheon, General Dynamics, L3, and Lockheed Martin are building to 'keep us safe'.

3. MIC . . . a corporate controlled industry!! Btw, if we combine the services we can save 28% . . !
Every other nation has combined their services --

imagine an almost 1/3 cut in MIC just by doing that!!

4. When dubya was selected by the Supreme Court, the military budget was $302 billion.
It's now at a trillion dollars a year. Cut it in half, and make veteran's care fully funded AND make it come out of the remaining $500 billion dollars.

5. The legal rights to decent DVD releases of TV series such as
WKRP, which had to be cut to ribbons before its DVD release of Season 1.

We CAN, however, afford DVD releases of shows already rerun to the ground on TV (such as Spongebob, NCIS, etc.)

9. Like all Empires in Decline,
the US Leadership (?) is spending money it doesn't have to fight WARS in places that don't matter.

Like a giant PacMan, Military Spending is eating the rest of the economy.
This money produces NOTHING useful for the American People.

The REALLY bad news is that the Democratic Party Leadership, elected on a platform of "CHANGE", is spending even MORE money on the military than Bush the Lesser and the Republicans.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

10. aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines..
Carriers cost from $4.5 to $12 Billion (and up) to make. $235 Billion a year to operate. $900 Billion to decommission!!!

Nuclear Subs also cost about $4.5 Billion (curious coincidence) to make, and a bit less to operate. No cost of decomissioning was found during my search.

I did find that US military is larger than the next 11 militaries combined, 10 of whom are our allies.

Maybe the military could get by on less without screwing the troops, or is that too much to ask?
