Movie, "Towering Inferno" versus BP's Deepwater Horizon
In "Towering Inferno," a classic 70s disaster movie, we watch the tall building's opening night. On that night we learn that the building's builders cut corners and skimped on fire-safety measures. Of course the building caught on fire. The building was far too tall for firefighters to effectively fight it. In the end, the builders died in the inferno along with many innocent people. The film's ultimate lesson: if you cut corners, you will be punished.

With BP, we are just learning how they've cut corners and made terrible engineering decisions such as eliminating a redundancy feature of the blowout preventer valve. They even operated the rig with the critical blow-out preventer not operating properly. All of this cutting of corners was to appease the corporate masters to finish the job in the "proper" amount of time. There has been no punishment--yet.

1. When truth came out about Deepwater Horizon disaster
I, too, was reminded of that movie "Towering Inferno". Good example.

Also when Hurricane Andrew came to South Florida it came out that building permit inspectors took bribe money rather than actually doing their jobs so many houses fell apart. They weren't up to building codes. Much older houses fared better because they were built better and up to strict codes in those old days. Later Builders of new houses didn't want to add more stuff to make them strong and safe so they bribed the inspectors because it was cheaper. It took a disaster to find out about that one.
