There could be a limit to the number of candidates...say the top 4 from each "major" party.
Most people over the age of 7 understand how to rank in order of preference.
It might take a little longer, but i think it would take away the incentive to try and cook the numbers, since more people might actually vote if they thought their person actuallyhad a chance, and it might forge some real coalitions too.
Some states already have a version of this, but in a national election, you could not "have another election" at a future date.. It would have to be from that one ballot.
It might even be fun to have the second highest vote getter end up as vice president. If he/she got the second-highest vote count, they ought to be entitled to have the second spot.
After Cheney, I would like to see the veep spot go back to a more "sedate" job, so a different-party veep might not be a big problem. It might even lead to some real bipartisanship if the people's choices were actualized, instead of having "the lesser of two evils" being shoved down our throats every election cycle.
...just thinking outside the box a little...
