ATTN: Asian-American DUers/political activists...help needed...

Hi DUers.

I’ve been a part of this community since 2003. In case you don’t know me (there’s a good chance), I’m a college sophomore currently enrolled in an Asian-American history class. The major requirement for this course is a 15-page research paper on some aspect of Asian-American history. The topic that I want to study is (relatively recent) political activism among Asian-Americans. For this research, we have to conduct at least two personal interviews with members of the AmerAsian community. My community is pretty white, but I do know a few Asian-Americans; however, most are older and none are involved in politics or activism.

That’s why I’m here asking for your help. Are there any Asian-American DUers here (specifically of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Laotian, or Cambodian ancestry) who would be willing to help me out and answer questions about your experiences? The list of questions is fairly substantive, and I want you to know what you’re getting into. However, we don’t have to organize anything formal; I can type up the questions, e-mail or PM them to you, and you can answer them at your convenience (the paper isn’t due until the last week of April, so you’ve got plenty of time). There’s also a release form you have to sign allowing me to use our interview in my paper, which I can mail (along with a self-addressed stamped envelope) or fax.

This is a paper topic that I’d really like to explore, so I would be forever grateful if a few kind-hearted DUers would be willing to help me out. 1. May I suggest A Couple People?

I am from Washington State and a big coup would be to interview our former governor, Gary Locke who is a Chinese American. He was governor until his term limit was up and was a state legislator before that for many years. I am not sure what he is doing right now, but his wife, is a TV reporter, and her name is Mona (Locke) and I believe she is with our local TV channel 7 KIRO and is also Asian American. You may be able to locate Gary there. Personally I did not think Gary was the best governor we had, because he was so hostel to the poor, but he was a very well organized and affective governor.

Another Asian American who does a great deal of progressive activism is a director at our local community agency called The Fremont Public Association which he helped build from a small store front community services agency to a multi-million dollar community services agency and his name is Tony Lee. Tony is awesome and his wife is also a director there for the Poverty Action Network named Aiko. I have worked with them both and they are both very caring, aware of the issues as well as working within the areas of social justice. I believe they also know Gary and maybe one of them could tell you where to find him. The Fremont Public's website is; http://www.fremontpublic.org and it is now a very important part of Seattle's infrastructure. Our Speaker of the House, Frank Chopp (not Asian American) is on the board at this agency.

for asian american assemblyman here in CA. His name is Ted Lieu.
