Flew over the Gulf 6 hours ago, just as the sun was setting.
I was at 30,000 feet, and the oil was everywhere as far as I could see. There are about 60 boats at the mouth of Mobile Bay and many others further out, but the size of this thing makes a joke of them. There could be 100,000 boats cleaning this thing up, and it would be nothing at all compared to what is out there.

There is no way to describe how big this is. There is no picture that can begin to show the immensity of it. The slicks are gigantic and the boats are tiny pinpricks scattered thinly in just a few critical areas. At the altitudes I fly at, I can see for 250 miles sometimes. In the Gulf, I can see nothing but oil slicks from Panama City to New Orleans.

This can't be cleaned up. There are not enough boats and booms in the entire world to do it.

2. My state governor has hundreds of ships and planes patrolling, but this is bigger than the armada.
The best we could do with that many ships and planes is simply pinpoint the area where the oil is moving into. We can slow it down by concentrating skimming ships in the area, but ultimately, this is like stopping an object the size of Texas. It's an impossible task. We are simply forestalling the inevitable.

3. "If seven maids with seven mops swept it for half a year"
"Do you suppose," the Walrus said, "that they could get it clear?"

"I doubt it," said the Carpenter, "And shed a bitter tear."

Who knew it was prophecy?

6. And more gushes into the Gulf every day. Why? because we're told
"there's nothing we can do." If they really believed that then they wouldn't have made three half assed attempts to stop it to begin with. We can put a guy on the moon but we can't plug a hole? Please!

7. Has the A Whale left Norfolk yet?
Last I heard it was supposed to leave on Friday but the EPA hadn't given their approval yet.

11. I disagree with the legitimacy of the observation.
Frankly, it sounded like some sort of backseat driving/conspiracy theory.

19. Can we stop a volcano from erupting? No?
That's what it is more than a mile below at the bottom of the deep ocean.

This is the interview Kindra Arnesen referred to when she spoke at the NOLA Gulf Emergency Summit.
