Without getting into a huge debate about top down vs bottom up design, or the proper usage of those terms, let me use them in these terms for the sake of this thread.
Republicans are more empathetic to those at the top of the power chain. They like authority figures, supply side economics, the "Decider", top-down.
Democrats are more empathetic to "the people", the working man, demand side economics, the 50 state strategy, bottom-up.
Anyway, as it relates to humor, Democrats like satire which exposes the foibles of people in power. We love to see the emporer being told he has no clothes, we love the pie in the face, we love bringing bloated figures down to our level.
A lot of people say that Republicans aren't funny. That's not quite true. Oh, they're funny alright. Trouble is, they're not exactly the kind of funny that's allowed on TV.
Being the top-down, authoritarian creatures they are, they like to make jokes at people they see as below them. They like to make fun of their weakness, their impotence, their inherent inferiority. Theirs is the domain of racial humor, handicapped jokes, dumb blonde jokes, insult comedy, etc.
They're not made for prime time, or even late night across from their Daily Show & Colbert counterparts. Their humor is tailor made for the dinner table, the board room, the locker room, the break room, the salon, the food court at the mall, and of course, the golf course.
This is why Republicans can't do satire. It's not in their blood. Why would you want to do anything that goes against the head chimp?
