Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 04:55 PM by xultar
Our situation is too fucked up for us to play pretty and fancy free with the 2008 vote. We don't have the luxury to send a message other than making sure we end up with a Democratic House, Senate, and WH. Hell, that's the message. Republics must lose and America wants a Democratic government.

Bicker all you want right now. But when the nominee is selected I expect us to pull together and do what is right.
You don't like Richardson, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Obama, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Clark, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Dean, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Hillary, fine. If she gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Sharpton, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Kucinich, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Kerry, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Gore, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Biden, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.
You don't like Edwards, fine. If he gets the nom or the VP slot you have to vote for the ticket.

I will do everything in my power to make sure there is no Republic WH or congressional win in 2008.

in desperate times, sometimes you have to put your principles aside. There are some dems who make me feel like I need to shower when I think of voting for them, but I'd rather have an icky feeling for four years than the cold hard fear I've lived with at times under repuke rule!

4. Yep, that's the way it has to be
I do reserve the right to work hard for my favorite candidate in the primaries, but if they lose to another, I go with the Democratic candidate. To do otherwise is to invite disaster, I think.

5. If Strom Thurmond had won the 1948 Democratic primary -- and he was a serious contender --
what would you have done?

This is a question not just about whether a Dem or Rep is in the White House, but about what the Democratic party is and stands for. And one you should be prepared to answer if you would truly vote for any person who happened to capture the Democratic primary nomination.

would the same kind of "my party, right or wrong" attitude prevail?

My objection isn't to any of our nominees this time around -- it's to the frighteningly simplistic posts that have been clogging the board this morning.

I'm sure he'll be running and I don't think people on DU would support him if he won. It's not a "my party, right or wrong" attitude, it's a "all of my party's serious candidates are better than the GOP's serious candidates" attitude.

Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 05:53 PM by emulatorloo
Read the whole article if you can -- it will curl your hair.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/9178374/gods_senator

God's Senator
Who would Jesus vote for? Meet Sam Brownback

<snip>

After little more than a decade in Washington, Brownback has managed to position himself at the very center of the Christian conservative uprising that is transforming American politics. Just six years ago, winning the evangelical vote required only a veneer of bland normalcy, nothing more than George Bush's vague assurance that Jesus was his favorite philosopher. Now, Brownback seeks something far more radical: not faith-based politics but faith in place of politics. In his dream America, the one he believes both the Bible and the Constitution promise, the state will simply wither away. In its place will be a country so suffused with God and the free market that the social fabric of the last hundred years -- schools, Social Security, welfare -- will be privatized or simply done away with. There will be no abortions; sex will be confined to heterosexual marriage. Men will lead families, mothers will tend children, and big business and the church will take care of all.

<snip>

--

And none of the other republicans are much better.

Whatever Dem gets the nomination has me 100%.

ANY Democrat is preferable to anyone from any other party.

It's fine to fight like hell during the primary and caucus seasons.

But once we nominate a candidate, then that's the person to vote for.

29. I see nothing wrong with the list.
I still see problems without impeachment though that keeps me with a certain emotional distance from politics in general or just party related. I can't get excited about 08. I know the media will use the election to equate lies with facts in debating the races and I know the public at large is not paying attention to the hearings so far. I have little hope right now in general terms that everything's ok or can be waiting for one more election.

There's simply no way our party, as it exists right now, will nominate a Zell Miller or a Strom Thurmond or a Lyndon LaRouche. 64. Vote for the candidate that will help save America
If a Democrat-in-name-only gets the nomination, it is your duty as an American to vote for someone who supports liberty and the Constitution.
If you will vote for (fill in the blank with the winner of the nomination) why dont you go ahead and send in an absentee ballot to the DLC and then get back to watching American Idol. We need a democratic party candidate that will shake up the staus quo and do what is right.
Just two months after we the people overwhelmingly declared at the ballot box that we are against the war and any action that does not immediately bring the troops home, there are democrats that say that they will "work with the president about the escalation", "not cut funding for the troop surge", and other such nonsense. NEWSFLASH, the surge is already underway and not a single dem did a single thing. Troops are on the ground, in harm's way, and dead because of this surge and some dems have been so irresponsible to say that "impeachment is off the table".
John Edwards said it best. "Silence is betrayal". These quiet dems have betrayed the voters, the troops, and the Constitution.

70. I'd go almost as far, but not quite.
There is no-one I think has any chance whatsoever of winning the Democratic nomination who I wouldn't advocate voting for (I'm not American; no matter who wins it I won't vote for them...) If the Democrats were to nominate Santorum or Tancredo I wouldn't suggest voting for them, but anyone who might actually win the Democratic nomination will be far better than anyone the Republicans might pick.

75. As a free moral agent, I don't "have" to vote for anyone.
"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all." --Thomas Jefferson to Francis Hopkinson, 1789. ME 7:300

"Were parties here divided merely by a greediness for office,...to take a part with either would be unworthy of a reasonable or moral man." --Thomas Jefferson to William Branch Giles, 1795.

79. "Egoism, in a broader sense, has been...
Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 01:40 PM by mzmolly
...presented as the source of moral action. It has been said that we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, bind up the wounds of the man beaten by thieves, pour oil and wine into them, set him on our own beast and bring him to the inn, because we receive ourselves pleasure from these acts... These good acts give us pleasure, but how happens it that they give us pleasure? Because nature hath implanted in our breasts a love of others, a sense of duty to them, a moral instinct, in short, which prompts us irresistibly to feel and to succor their distresses... The Creator would indeed have been a bungling artist had he intended man for a social animal without planting in him social dispositions. It is true they are not planted in every man, because there is no rule without exceptions; but it is false reasoning which converts exceptions into the general rule." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Law, 1814.

"Self-interest, or rather self-love, or egoism, has been more plausibly substituted as the basis of morality. But I consider our relations with others as constituting the boundaries of morality. With ourselves, we stand on the ground of identity, not of relation, which last, requiring two subjects, excludes self-love confined to a single one. To ourselves, in strict language, we can owe no duties, obligation requiring also two parties. Self-love, therefore, is no part of morality. Indeed, it is exactly its counterpart." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Law, 1814.

"I believe... that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another." --Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, 1816.

"The greatest honor of a man is in doing good to his fellow men, not in destroying them." --Thomas Jefferson: Address to Shawanee Nation, 1807.

"When principles are well understood, their application is less embarrassing." --Thomas Jefferson to Gov. Morris, 1793.

81. The only thing I HAVE to do is vote how I feel. It is between my conscience and myself
Other than that, I don't HAVE to vote in any other manner, despite what you say. And frankly, if we get another slate of two serious pro-war candidates come November, I could very well vote Green. I will not support any candidate who is in favor of continuing this war, for by supporting such a candidate, I am, by extension, supporting the war.

It has been shown time and again that lockstep thinking leads to disaster. You may be able to deal with the blood of innocents on your hands, but I certainly can't.

Perhaps rather than blindly following the party, we the people who make up the party should demand of our so called leaders that each and every one of them will do their utmost to get us out of this war. And gee, it isn't like that is an unpopular opinion these days:shrug:

108. Geez, after all this time, I'm finding that I have to continue to repeat myself
The Greens didn't affect a damn thing in Florida.

First off, who was it who awarded Bush the Florida vote? Oh, yeah, the Supreme Court. When the eventual recount was finally done, months after Bush took office, who did they finally find won the vote? Gore. Who was it who pissed off 600,000 Fla. voters who were either registered Dems or self described liberals? Yes, Gore did this with his pro drilling stance on the issue of off shore drilling in Florida. In fact he pissed off these voters so much with his pro-drilling stance these 600,000 voters voted for Bush. Oh, and even the former head of the DLC stated that Nader and the Greens didn't cost Gore the election, in fact he stated that Nader and the Greens actually helped Gore by taking away votes from Bush:wow:From Al From, in Blueprint magazine: "The assertion that Nader's marginal vote hurt Gore is not borne out by polling data. When exit pollers asked voters how they would have voted in a two-way race, Bush actually won by a point. That was better than he did with Nader in the race."<http://www.ndol.org/ndol_ci.cfm?kaid=127&subid=179&contentid=2919>

So again, who was it who contributed the most to Gore's defeat in Florida? Yup, that's right, Gore.

So please, stop spreading around this popular myth. It has been disproven time and again, OK.

Edited on Mon Jan-22-07 02:42 PM by TXDemGal
I will vote for it! To argue that voting for the Dem nominee no matter what is "my party right or wrong" is to miss the point. Anyone whose name is on the Dem side of the ticket in '08 WILL be a better choice than whoever ends up on the R side--given the current state of the Republican party. Therefore, I will vote for our nominee, even if it's a yellow dog. I prefer a politics of pragmatism. Idealism is nice in theory, but in the workings of everyday life (and death), it usually doesn't cut it.

107. But since we have a good choice of yellow dogs....
I don't want the yellow dog that licks my hands under the dining table, or the one that chews the furniture and poops on the Persian rug.

I don't want the yellow dog that knocks over the trash can or chews the crotches out of women's panties.

I don't want a yellow dog with the mange, or worms, or one that has to wear one of those radar set things on its head.

If I have a good choice of yellow dogs I'm going to pick the one that's loyal, healthy, smart, and obedient.

And I feel blessed to know that I already have two or three choices among that kind of yellow dog!

That's what's called accountability- and the lack of it throughout the Clinton administration and beyond is what cost the Dems their majority for the last 12 years.

106. Uh...No.
I'll vote for who I think will best lead the country. Be that Democratic, third part or (highly, extremely, would have to nominate zell miller-esque doubt) Republican.

I don't see why they should be GAURANTEED my vote if they don't represent my values. Maybe it's time for a real three or more party system. Because the idea of voting against someone as opposed to voting for someone really turns me off of the whole system.

That said, if it looks like it's going to be close, I'll most likely go democratic. The only one I really have a hard time stomaching on that list is hillary, but that's a whole nother can of worms. I just think it's time to wake up and get rid of the two party system.
