7. Born in SC

I apologize if this is a bit of a rant.

I was born and raised 15 miles from Seneca SC the hometown of John Edwards. Seneca is next door to Clemson (5 Miles approx.)

I am caucasian but became aware early in my life that racism was wrong and fought it as much as I could during the 60's.
I was called a 'N' lover and more because of my beliefs. Clemson, Anderson, Seneca and Greenville/Spartanburg have been brought kicking and screaming into the age of equal rights! Strom Thurmond was the tip of a massive racist iceberg.

I no longer live in that area but do have relatives in SC. Racism still exists there. It is deep rooted. People there still long for the days of the plantation and that history is a part of the fabric of their lives. It's a sick fantasy that can only die after many generations have died. The same way the 'caveman' mentality eventually gave way to modern thinking.

It's sad but remains one of the main reasons I left my hometown.

My father lived through the depression and was a Democrat his entire life. All South Carolinians are not racist but racism's evil
heart is still there.

Thank God for Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird gave me hope.

An example of current racism is the fact that racism was not depicted in the movie Radio. The 'powers that be' did not want to insult the bigots and business folks in Anderson, SC so they left out the racism. I was was there. I knew Radio.
We continue to be fed bullshit because society has developed a taste for it. Until we spit it back into the face of the people in control we will continue to be fed.

The incident at Clemson is nothing more than racism showing it's ugly head thus proven it is there.

Steven Colbert also no longer lives in SC. I think he has a vacation home on the coast. (could be wrong) I love him! :dem:

And I can kind of understand where you're coming from - I'm from rural Virginia, where most people I know actually voted for George "Macaca" Allen, he of the racist remarks, Confederate flags, and the infamous noose in his office. :eyes: So yeah, I know what you mean, and it's very sad but true that racism still runs deep in some parts of this country.

And I stand corrected on the Colbert thing - I thought I remembered Jon Stewart calling him a member of the "South Carolina aristocracy" or something, and it didn't occur to me that he probably doesn't live there anymore. :silly: Duh! But yeah, I think he's amazing too. :)

If I were an African American student at one of these schools like Clemson or Tarleton, next MLK day I'd be on the lookout for news of any of these parties, and attend with as many of my minority friends as possible.
