New ($64 million dollar) Complex for Iraqi Police
New Complex for Iraqi Police

Army News Service|by LaDonna Davis

SALMAN PAK, Iraq -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) motto is "Building Strong". In Iraq, the USACE mission is to build strong the country and its people through solid infrastructure and design that will help sustain and strengthen the Iraqis for generations to come.

The USACE, Gulf Region District (GRD) is helping the Iraqis by managing a multi-million dollar National Police Sustainment Brigade Complex that will help strengthen the Iraqi police force so they can better secure and protect their own country.

The $64 million complex, in Salman Pak district of southern Baghdad, will include a $44 million compound for the Federal Police, a $10 million explosive ordnance disposal headquarters and training center, and a $10 million vehicle maintenance facility. The complex will also provide billeting to accommodate more than 2,000 Iraqi Police members.

"The current federal police forces have maxed out their existing facilities to where any expansion can't happen," said Maj. Daniel Harvala, an engineer project manager with U.S. Forces-Iraq. "That's why we're building this complex, so the Iraqis can build up their brigade and build up their police capabilities."

Though the NPSB Complex is on track and scheduled to be complete on time, it has not been met without its challenges, mainly, working with three different contractors simultaneously who all share one project site.
