Laura Bush "couldn't recall" who gave her college commencement speech....

ARLINGTON, Texas -- First lady Laura Bush told University of Texas at Arlington graduates Friday that you never know where life will take you.

Speaking at an event dubbed a celebration of graduation by organizers, Bush said that when contemplating what kind of parting wisdom to give, she thought back to her own college graduation.

But she said she couldn't recall who gave the speech at the University of Texas at Austin in 1973, adding probably because she skipped the ceremony.

"But I did look it up," the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported her saying, "and I found out who gave that address. And you can imagine my surprise when I discovered it was some guy named George Bush. Four years after that speech, I married his son."

2. But I'll bet you any amount of money that she still recalls, clearly,
who owes her a ten-spot still from her days as "Dime Bag Laura" at university...!

http://dir.salon.com/story/books/int/2004/09/14/kelley/print.html

One of the major themes in Kelley's book is the family's weakness for liquor and drugs. Alcoholism, she writes, runs deeply in the family and among its victims, according to one Bush family friend, was Prescott, a "major-league alcoholic," who was in the habit of checking himself into his men's club and country club to go on benders. And Kelley writes that George W. Bush is not the only one in the first family who enjoyed illegal substances. While a student at Southern Methodist University in the 1960s, first lady Laura Bush was known "as a go-to girl for dime bags of marijuana."

19. I have helped some major biographers in their work. KK is a charlatan.
She should be writing on Page Six of the NYPost.

Mia Farrow, Lauren Bacall, etc. said that no matter what a shit Sinatra was, the stuff Kelley wrote about him was simply untrue.

You can get away with writing anything.

She lives here in DC, she sat in front of me at "Letters From Iwo Jima."

25. I wasn't unaware and out of touch.
and I don't remember who spoke at my college graduation. It was either no one famous or no one I cared about.

I remember being there, too. And I also remember wishing for it to be over so I could go out and party.

Heck, I can't even find out on The Google. It's not there.

22. Mine was Peter Ueberroth. Ugh. Boring. He was all the rage
in the few years after the 1984 Olympics in LA, which is when he spoke at our graduation.

I remember him because I thought he was mind-numbingly boring. Our school had scored much better graduation speakers in prior years.

23. Point being . . . ?
I'm no huge fan of Laura Bush, either, but this actually makes her seem more of a sentient human being than other things she has said. She felt surprise. Good for her. She usually seems completely unfeeling.
