1. My wife and I go shopping several time a week to various malls and
big stores...I like to look at people's faces, and I am amazed how few of them seem happy.
People in the US look angry and scared, tired and depressed...very few appear interested or content or happy...

It seems to be an epidemic.

4. I noticed that when I came back from a tour in Egypt....
People in Egypt look so much happier in general than we do, and we have so much more materially than they do there. But there is something wrong with our culture, that makes us so unhappy....

3. Live by efficiency, die by efficiency
We want everything in society to be efficient. I'm not sure why labor isn't part of that.

5. Our job is to work to support those who can't and support children (ours or others)
Edited on Thu Jul-29-10 07:34 AM by stray cat
if you really care about others and government programs to help people - you and I have to work and make money to support others who need more support. You and I have to pay the price for the programs we expect the government to deliver

6. That load of crap completely exculpates the robber barons...
of responsibility for the mess they've made obliterating the middle class and trying to push us all back into wage serfdom. Our job is to make sure the haves pay their fair share (which at this point is negligible) and the have-mores pay their fair share (which is substantial) to support and lift the quality of the have-nots.

Honestly, the solution to most of our problems is higher tax rates for those above 65% of median income and a shorter workweek for equal pay...oddly that creates what most Americans want and need right now...good jobs and economic growth. (Yes, I'm advocating for a hard-cap 30 hour workweek. (All) Overtime is illegal, mandated as triple-time pay and with a matching fine...making it cost 6x as much as hiring more labor.)

What we don't need is more Americans buying into the lie foisted upon us by the bourgeois robber barons.

7. Absentee parents forced to work long hours for inadequate pay
That's not what made this country great. It's what will make us a third world nation. Kids need full time parenting. Without well educated and well adjusted kids there will be no stable future for America.

We need to get back to one wage earner families - and do what we can to ensure each child has time with both their parents.
