Those who think that drawing cartoons is pretty damn easy compared to juggling the Congress Obama has, and that heehawing like jackasses every time a supposed "zinger" like this is posted does nothing to further the aims of the poster or those who applaud him or her, let alone throwing around childish terms like "cheerleaders."

I've been following DU since late in the primaries. I don't post much because I'm reluctant to be drawn into endless flamewars, which don't do anything to further progressive causes - in fact they're more likely to make people click elsewhere in disgust.

This sort of thread is just pathetic flamebait guaranteed to be pointlessly divisive, as ever. Hassling congresscritters or effective lobbying outside DU would be a far better use of time and energy and resources, IMO.

22. Actually very similar to the last 8 years
There are folks that are very disappointed in what is going on right now, and they feel as disconnected from the larger process as they did with Bush. As such it makes them feel less disconnected and isolated when they can find like minds such as the cartoon. It is what they enjoy about Colbert, Stewart, Maddow, and Keith. It is pretty much what started this whole place. It is only amplified for them by the fact that they now feel more disconnected around here too.

24. If you feel disconnected
How about those who feel alienated by this constant petty - and I'll say it again, childish - carping?

The issues may not be petty, but the behavior is. I find it very hard to reconcile my sympathy with the aims of those who behave like that with my boredom and disgust at the conduct. Sure, I don't have to click in and read it, but it's threads like this that dissuade me - and I'd imagine others like me - from becoming more involved.

Or is that the aim?

26. How did it make you feel under Bush?
The basic complaints sound very familiar in tone, style, and content. Did it dissuade you from reading back then? Or is it that you find being on the other side of criticism difficult. "Dish it out but can't take it" kind of attitude? This site was practically created to provide a forum for exactly what you are now complaining about. It is roughly what the "underground" moniker was all about.

27. You assume too much
You choose to oversimplify this into "sides," and again, I find that childish behavior in this context.

To address your question, it's ridiculous. With Bush and Cheney in power, the US and the entire world was at the mercy of the neocons, who claimed to create their own reality. If you can't see how silly and shortsighted your comparison is, there's nothing I'll be able to say to persuade you, not least because I can't be bothered because you seem very entrenched in this behavior.

I've been active in politics off and on since the Reagan years, and was eventually part of a group that pioneered using online communication for international peace activism. If we'd imagined then that all the fantastic facilities available in the future for mobilization and the dissemination of information would have come down to threads like this, we'd have despaired and given up.

As for what this site is "about," you have your views. Like I said, I find this conduct alienating and pointless, and I'm probably not alone in that. I don't expect that to concern you.

That is the question you keep avoiding. It seems you only find it pointless when you don't agree with the larger point. All of the behavior and methodologies of making a point haven't changed, merely the targets.

Look, if you want a forum that uses strict academic methods of logic, and contains verifiable references in making points, have at it. You won't find alot of participation. If you only want criticism of the GOP around here, even Skinner won't support that. If criticism of Obama is going to be held to a hire standard of authorship than members of the GOP, I think you've got a hypocrisy problem.

I have avoided no question, but in any case, you're not the fucking quizmaster or gatekeeper round here. And you can stick your "hypocrisy" where the sun don't shine. I'll use the word "childish" again, because it fits.

46. Thank you, tavalon
I appreciate that.

It is possible to disagree - especially about tactics - and still be civil. But I doubt I'll be a regular poster in the 1000s precisely because exchanges like this suck up energy and time, and there are so many ways to waste both of those.

If my tone's immoderate above, then I resent a total stranger calling me a "hypocrite" on no evidence whatsoever.

It's also because I find it hard to reconcile what some of you seem to feel very vehemently about as the wrongs of the world and this administration with the baiting tactics so commonly found on this board. Threads like this may rally some, but they win few new friends, and those they do win are likely to stick around just for the "laughs" and negativity.

If people feel that strongly about issues, it's disappointing to see the energy channeled in what seems such an unproductive direction.

And since Zipplewrath appears to be so interested, when we were campaigning in opposition to Reagan, Bush I, quite a few of Clinton's policies, and Bush II, it was IRL, not chortling over some lame cartoon or other online.

I got a "welcome" and a mutually respectful agreement to differ from a couple of posters, both of which I value, so I'd say I'm ahead on the game.

And your achievement is ...?

137. so now doing what our constitution demands of us is CARPING?
Have you ever read the constitution? Do you understand what it means? We the people are the Government , we elect people to represent us, when they are not doing so it is our OBLIGATION to stand up to them to demand they represent us!

Our constitution leaves the responsibility of what is done in our name to do something about it to us..to we the people.

We are responsible for our Republic Democracy..not the politicians..but us.

When they are hurting our nation it is up to US to speak out and to do whatever nessesary to yell loud and clear of what they are doing!! US..

Perhaps you are the one Carping..seems to me you just don't care for our constitution, nor do you respect your responsibility, seems you only respect politicians..and find the constitution, and your duty to preserve it .. a burden.

I am glad I am me and not you!

I hold every elected Politican accountable irregardless of party..I believe in Country first..not party.

"To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men."

- Abraham Lincoln

"We the People are the rightful masters of both Congress and the Courts--not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."
-- Abraham Lincoln

"It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government."
--Thomas Paine

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government -- lest it come to dominate our lives and interests."
- Patrick Henry

"If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
-- George Orwell, 1945

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Thomas Jefferson (1801–1809)

Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909)
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

I can just imagine if you lived in these brillant men's times..you would have considered them CARPERS!

118. You forgot a few things . . .
Like his attack on social security (the President's Cat Food Commission), his and Arne's attempts to undermine public schools and teachers by taking a bad law, the No Child Left Behind Act, and making it worse, expansion of government spying on Americans (watch what you say on FaceBook), his caving in to Wall Street and giving us a financial reform package that doesn't end too big to fail, the shadow banking system and unregulated bets on company failures (CDOs), which we have to pay for when big Wall Street firms lose them (socialization of losses by Wall Street). And so forth

He started with the biggest majorities (a lot bigger than Bush had) but look how much of his agenda he's accomplished compared to Bush!

133. I beg to differ....

"I beg to differ with you. Here are just a few that I could remember or find. Obama has accomplished a huge amount, more than in any other first term since Lyndon Johnson. He also has had to deal with the oil spill nightmare in which he got BP to agree to a $20 billion escrow.

* $787 billion-$288 billion -- came in the form of tax cuts for the middle class and lower, making it one of the largest tax cuts in history, with sizable credits for energy conservation and renewable-energy production as well as home-buying and college tuition.

* Expanded the State Children's Health Insurance Program

* A law to allow the FDA to regulate tobacco

* Enacted legislation to make it easier for workers to sue employers for age or sex discrimination

* The largest land conservation law in nearly two decades

* A credit card holders' bill of rights

* Health Care Reform- He is the only president that managed to get it past. Is it great, no. It is incremental.

* Financial Reform- It is incremental.

There are numerous things I would like to see strengthened or focused on too....jobs being number one, but to say he is attacking you, and comparing him to Bush is way over the top."

the real sad thing is that people's rage haven't been quelled, and their solution is to vote in Republicans this coming mid-term, which will happen. They will be voting for the policies that they hate, but they don't understand policy to begin with so it won't matter.
