Tucson, AZ: Sun Tran employees going on strike

About 550 Sun Tran employees will go on strike after most of them voted Sunday night to reject the company's contract offer.

Bus drivers, mechanics, and cleaning staff plan to go on strike. They plan to walk off the job starting at 12:01am Monday.

The Teamsters Local 104 and Sun Tran spent months negotiating on a new contract. Teamsters said that Sun Tran had held back until the last day when it offered to cover increases in health insurance premiums. However, the two-year contract did not include any wage increases.

"No matter what we do, even if we'd accepted the offer, there's going to have to be massive service cuts and layoffs of the employees and we asked for assurances that there wouldn't be any layoffs and we did not get that," said Andy Marshall, principal executive officer for Teamsters Local 104.
