My grandmother fell into the category of house rich and cash poor. Widowed and living alone, wanting to keep her independence she took out a reverse morgage. Were it not for a reverse mortgage let by her long term bank, she would not have been able to stay in her house until her death at age 88. The mortgage was a partial mortgage that gave her money to live above and beyond simple Social Security checks. It gave her economic freedom and peace of mind. On her death the house was sold, the reverse mortgage paid and the remaining money went to her heirs.

Was that an evil sleazy mortgage?

12. No, there are obviously some good businesses.

But look at all the shady mortgage companies that used every trick in the book to deceive homeowners and virtually destroy our economy. When dealing with an industry that has more crooks, than ethical and honest people the consumer has to be very careful.

I'm glad your situation turned out okay, bit I'm truly sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I'm glad she had a family who she could trust and could help her. A lot of companies prey on the elderly because they are vulnerable. Those people will have a special place in hell.

I agree with you that the are far too many companies out there ready to prey on our senior citizens. The real shame is, many people do not realize there are small, local, community banks ready willing and able to help them and not exploit them. Thank you for your respect for my gran - she was a wonderful person - and for her, a locally sourced reverse mortgage allowed her to have independence and peace of mind during her final years.

Now, TV hucksters shilling for predatory mortgage companies, I think we can all agree on that one...

There was an episode a few weeks ago where they showed a picture that was supposed to of the two guys, as kids, with dad. I swear they used a picture of the Fonz from the "cloth jacket years" but I can't be sure. If not, maybe it was from the Happy Days lunchbox. :)

23. We had a IRL version of the Fonz in my 'hood

back in the 70s, however he was more true to life as a biker type, rather than the nice wiseguy portrayed on TV. Pretty sure he must long been pushing up the daisies by now, considering the prodigious amount of dope he did. His surname was very similar to Fonzarelli.

A group of us went to see "The Fonz" during the height of Happy Days popularity, in downtown Detroit, can't remember what he was there for, but he was of course, not in his costume of blue jeans, white t-shirt, and black leather jacket. I remember noticing the disappointment on the younger kids faces, and that they were seeing and hearing the real Henry Winkler. He was quite boring, and the audience was obviously very uncomfortable talking with him and asking questions.
