Heinz and Hunt's ketchup appear to be ditching high-fructose corn syrup
Just noticed it at my local supermarket. Every Hunt's bottle now proudly sports a "No HFCS" label on the front.

Heinz has always produced a non-HFCS ketchup, but only sold it at organic/health food stores. Now they're marketing "Simply Heinz" ketchup at mainstream grocers that is also devoid of HFCS. The larger bottles still contain HFCS, but this will probably change over time.

Good move by both companies. Here's hoping Del Monte and the other slackers pick up the pace.

10. Wouldn't be surprised in the least--but Splenda instead
"You can cook with it!" :D !! :D !! :D !! :puke: That does NOT make it all right. And yet lots of food companies are sneaking Splenda into food. Ick.

Speaking of which...the family went to our local hamburger place Sunday night for a quick dinner (and ice cream sundaes :9 ). Mr. MG got one of their "famous" root beers. I took a sip and... :puke: He didn't get diet (he hates the stuff), but I would SWEAR they had added some artificial sweetener even to the regular. It didn't taste the way it used to--had that funky aftertaste.

Trust no-1...in the food industry.

18. Nope.
Tomato concentrate made from vine ripened tomatoes, sugar, distilled vinegar, salt, less than 2%: onion power, garlic power, natural flavors.

That's it.

30. Its cheaper than dirt.
HFCS is literally the cheapest shit on the planet.

You can put it in anything and the price GOES DOWN. Sell it for same price and you made more profit. Want more profit, just put more HFCS. More profit put in more HFCS.

Eventually we will be simply eating flavored HFCS.

We actually had to look (fairly hard) for it in Oz to follow a pecan pie recipe.

Things here generally here contain cane sugar.

56. It's pretty hard to buy in the US too.
At least in the quantity you'd want for a pie. Though, like druidity33 said, you were likely after plain old corn syrup.
Most HCFC is sold in 55 gallon (200 litre) drums. Smallest unit I've seen so far was a 5 gallon (~19 litres) bucket which was marketed to bee keepers.

The stuff is so cheap to make that it's impractical to package it in smaller units.

9. I'm hoping this will spread to all of their specialty ketchups as well
Next on the list: barbecue sauce. Using HFCS to produce barbecue sauce should be a crime. In East Texas and St. Louis, for starters, there's probably enough folks who'd be willing to make it a crime.

32. It is simply a filler.
Say you got product X. It doesn't need sugar, it doesn't need sweeter of any kind. This product costs $0.80 to make. The brass at top wants that cheaper. Replace 10% of the product by volume w/ HFCS. Blam knocks a nickle off the production cost. HFCS is insanely cheap; there is no ingredient cheaper on the planet. So it isn't just used to replace sugar. It is used to replace sugar, flour, grains, starches, etc. Anything you replace w/ HFCS brings the cost down. It is why they started flavoring milk. Now flavored "milk" has more HFCS than soda. Parents think it is good because it "milk" yet it is loaded w/ more HFCS than soda is. The HFCS is cheap. More HFCS and less millk = higher profits.

Kinda like drug dealers cutting cocaine with lesser product to increase profit margins. When they add it to something that doesn't need sweetness they then need to go back and add all kicks of extra shit in order to mask the taste and make it less sweet. If food companies could get away with it they would form a brick of HFCS into a steak shape, sprinkle some steak flavoring, add some artificial grill marks and try to sell that as "meat".

I cut HFCS completely out of my diet along with processed foods and most sugars. I feel alot better and am down 38 pounds since January. I just have to think more when I shop and cook.

This week I gave up coffee. If I was able to quit smoking a year and a half ago then I know I can finally kick my 22 year coffee habit.
