Bush, Democrats agree to form war-on-terror committee

WASHINGTON: US President George W. Bush and leaders of Congress have agreed to create a joint "consultative group" on the war on terror, officials in the White House and Senate told AFP on Tuesday.

While lawmakers pushed for legislation to condemn and possibly limit Bush's expansion of US troops in Iraq, the president spoke on the telephone on Tuesday with Democratic leaders Senator Harry Reid and Representative Nancy Pelosi, who agreed that the new group will meet for the first time next week.

"They all agreed to creating a bipartisan consultative group on the global war on terror," a White House official said.

"This is the group that the president talked about in his January 10 speech," the official added, referring to Bush's announcement of his new strategy for the Iraq war.

In that speech Bush proposed a working group involving both Democrats and Republicans "to win the war on terror".
