Considering how many new cars are rolled out every year, it's no surprise that a few might be just plain homely. There's a chance that certain styles might become fashionable with a dash of retro hip. (Well, maybe not from the 1970s.) But for the most part, the following 50 cars will never be anything but design duds.

Fully agree that they looked MUCH better with fat tires. I had a friend that had a Gremlin and I thought it looked pretty cool. Of course, his had fat tires and the back end jacked up. You know the drill. Looked like a way different car than the pic of the one posted in the OP.

I think it's very retro looking, and it holds a ton of luggage or musical gear, although the comment on the sight lines is valid, depending on your height/seat/mirror adjustment.

They just rolled the last PT Cruiser off the assembly line, after 10 years.

What's ugly is the Chevy copy of the PT, looks like it's homely older sister...

I bought my PT, "pre-owned," for cash, with low miles and decent gear hauling capability (with drums/musical equipment and/or artworks of a large size being a number one concern). So far, no major mechanical concerns have been encountered, going on 78,000 miles.

MPGs run around 18-23, not so great, not the worst.

I use a plug-in electric motor scooter for all of my local transportation needs -- within a 20-30 mile round trip radius, not requiring large hauling capacities. I can carry the equivalent of two shopping bags worth of stuff on the e-scooter. It goes 25-30 mph top speed, so it keeps up with the average surface street traffic, easily.

Prowler was underpowered, rode rough, had serious fit & finish problems and looked like shit. If ZZ Top got too drunk and threw up in their classic Ford, it would turn into the Prowler.

People actually pointed and laughed when she drove around town in 1985. When she upgraded to a red Pinto, Dad advertised the wagon as free to anyone who could get it running and out of the driveway. Only 1 person called.

50. My first "new" car was a Levi Gremlin.

It was my favorite car ever. It was indestructible. After I put about 100,000 miles on it I gave it to my nephew. He drove it for three years and passed it on to his younger brother who drove it for a couple more years. After that my parents pulled it behind their Winnebago all over the country for a few more years. Currently it is under a tarp in my uncle's barn. Think the 8 track still works? How about the CB radio?

Anyway, I am thinking about having it restored. I have been looking for one to buy but I can not find one exactly like the one I had.

obviously doesn't know much about the cars that came before these examples and why some of these look rather sad.

He seemed to dislike the oblique lines in bodywork(Thing and others)but those lines made the sheetmetal work cheaper to produce. Curves are much more expensive.

Lots of the cars he knocked were great favorites of the kids of the period...including the Subaru Brat. The Gremlin too for that matter...saw many in their day all decorated up with hippie flowers and such. Pinto, despite its tire and gas tank problems moved a tremendous number of people around fairly cheaply.

I believe that many of these designs were better than the finished product AFTER the executive committee made changes to them. Both the Gremlin and the Pacer were what I call unfinished designs...rushed into production before completion.

Probably this was the end of our love affair with cars, certainly the end of Marque Identification by many former loyal-to-the-brand owners.

The inside is all plastic and neoprene, it sleeps two comfortably, and I can fit a 12 foot tree and 8 foot boards in there WITH the back closed.

Nash had some Pinifarina designed cars in the early 50's, AMC made some good looking midsize cars from 1963-1968, the Javelin was a classic and Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees have become iconic.
