2. 2008 - 2009 is what comes up from Canada research, but I remember discussing the

boarding schools in Anthro classes in the mid 70's but not much was really discussed even with my Lakota professor other than the BIA was considered to be the "big tit" to Indian world She was not raised on the rez and was educated in public schools.

Nothing was ever mentioned about the horrible physical and sexual abuse until years later. My husband who worked for the Dept of the Interior at the time passed the subject off as "assimilation of the American Indian into the white man's society."

That was a sore spot between us but he died in 1981 befoe the scandal was exposed.

3. Before WWII?

It was well known that Navajo students were punished for speaking their native language -- that is, until Uncle Sam needed them as code talkers. And that wasn't the only thing they were abused for....

in boarding schools and we all know what happened at Wounded Knee in the mid 70's.
