I could see this scenario playing out if the USSC legalizes gay marriage everywhere

Maybe I'm pulling the cart before the horse, but stay with me for a moment here:

Let's say the USSC rules in favor of gay marriage for all Americans, perhaps in 2012 or 2013.

Then I could see county clerks in deeply Red, teabagger counties refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples as some sort of acts of civil disobedience. And in some states I could see the state authorities supporting this official defiance.

At that point it would be incumbent upon the federal government to intervene.

In that case President Eisenhower opposed the ruling, but he would not permit Arkansas' open defiance of a court order and he sent the Army in.

While President Obama's commitment to LGBT equality has been lacking, I could not see him (if he is still president when such a hypothetical case came about)permitting localities to defy the USSC. On the other hand, I could see a President Romney or Palin taking the Andrew Jackson approach to an unfavorable ruling ("The Court has made it's decision now let them enforce it")

4. You don't need to take out a license in your county of residence.

So it would be a remarkably futile, empty gesture. Especially since all that pretty wedding money would go elsewhere.

As someone who was in the gift business for over 20 years, I LOVED WEDDINGS. Because weddings generate endless anniversaries, and birthdays, and Christmases...all of which require a present.

Gay marriage is one gorgeous stimulus package.

But that could still be really problematic for people in a state like Texas if say the only counties that offer up licenses are Harris (Houston), Dallas, Travis (Austin) and maybe one or two others.

those who can't afford to travel at all, but under the OP's scenario a license and wedding ceremony obtained anywhere in the U.S. would be valid.

I must say that as a Las Vegas resident I can envision a real mini-boom to our economy <G>. Most wedding chapels etc. here already offer commitment ceremonies, but of course they're not legally binding till the law gets changed.
