Cop Saves 12 Baby Ducks

Here's another awesome baby duck story. It all began when 12 baby ducks fell into a storm drain. With no way to retrieve them, their mother waited hopelessly next to the drain. Then a police officer by the name of Eileen Emiddio came to their rescue. She got into the drain and saved each and every duckling. At that moment, Eileen Emiddio became a hero. I just drove past my neighbor's cat, who was lying dead on the side of the road. Her eight year old daughter will be heartbroken, and the poor kitty was less than a year old. I needed a bit of good news!

That's always a tough moment.

I've had a cat hit and killed by a car when I was young, but for me the worst was a few years ago when a lady knocked on my door early one Saturday.......she asked if the cat lying in the street was mine. She had apparently hit it. It wasn't my cat, but I knew it from the neighborhood. He was an old tom, friendly and liked to be petted. I said it wasn't mine, and a few seconds later a teenage girl came running out of the house across the street. It was heartbreaking.

I wanted to yell at the woman, because I live on a very narrow dead end street that people fly up and down all the time without regard, but I figured she was going to have to face the music anyway.

...With a cat's nature being what it is, the last thing I would do is have let one of our cats out. It's just too dangerous for them and unfair to the smaller critters that naturally live around here.

23. Yep, mine stay inside too, and the neighbors tried to keep little Billy inside as well

because they knew that this area was dangerous for small animals. Unfortunately the kitty was an expert escape artist. :-(

There is a neighbor here at my apt. complex who has cats. There are always dead animals (chipmunks, moles, birds, etc.) laying around outside their unit. Cats should be kept inside where they are safe, and so the other critters can live in peace.

35. There's a way to have kitties both in and outdoors - and safe.

I've used the Cat Fence-In system for over 7 years, and the only time one of our kitties has escaped has been human error. The only thing is, it isn't cheap and you have to start out with a standard fenced-in yard/porch area. The area can be small. My babies love being able to go out in good weather; other cats and critters can't get in, and I put all my bird feeders where the kitties AREN'T.... in my front yard!

Our original big fence was installed to keep the moose out, so we had a double win on this one.

22. I'm so sorry that you witnessed a similar event. I felt like I'd taken a cold fist to

the gut when I realized just who the kitty was. It happened about a block away on a very busy residential street where the traffic drives WAY too fast. The family had done all they could to keep their little eight month old tuxedo kitty "Billy" safely inside, but he was a very skilled escape artist. So adorable and friendly, too. The little girl had begged her mother for the past several years for a kitten, and they only got him about five months ago. I haven't seen their car yet today and someone already collected the body. I may have to be the one to tell them. :-(

I doubt she did it on purpose, but the cat was probably left outside on purpose.

I almost ran over a neighbor's cat the other night - on my bike. He came darting out from behind a parked car just a couple feet in front of me.

Sorry you went through that, but as long as people leave their cats out, it's going to happen, and it's usually very upsetting for the person hitting them too, and no more their fault than the cat's people's fault.

32. When your cats come to you as strays, it's hard to keep them inside

People let their cats out to wander all the time in these parts. My family had cats for thirty years. They all came to us as strays, so we always let them out to do their thing and quite a few of them lived well into their late teens. Most cats were smart enough not to cross the street at my old house, because it was a little busier than the place I live now. Only one in my family ever got hit and killed by a car, and that was a very young cat who was a daredevil in general and misjudged how to cross the road.

The problem in my current neighborhood is the street isn't much of a street, but people race up and down it like it's Route 95. It's barely wide enough for two cars to pass one another. One of these days it's going to be a kid instead of a cat.
