Two very idiotic bumper stickers as seen in two different locations:

The license plate indicated it was bought (or exchanged from out of state) around spring of this year.

Didn't even bother to take down the sticker? 22 years. Jesus man.

And the other one:

This one had me rolling on the car laughing (literally had to stop the car from crashing into a parked car)

3. Isn't that first car...
the infamous Porsche 944? A Completely failed design that was supposed to take the place of the 914? Geeze, I miss my 914.

8. Yes, it's a 944, but calling it a "failed design" seems dubious.
Porsche probably sold more of those than they did 914s.

914 2.0, and now owns a
968, the final descendant

9. Sorry...
Didn't mean to offend.

Over the years I owned six 914's. I would purchase a beat up one, fix it up and sell it...move to the next one. I ended up with a '74 2.0 that I loved and cared for like it was my baby. During that time I studied the history of the 914...I was a little obsessed.

I admit, I know very little about the 924/944. However, from what I gathered, it wasn't their most successful design. Wasn't the 944 a sort of replacement for the 924 because if issues? As their first (modern) front engine...I heard that they had problems.

And wasn't the 924 a sort of replacement for the 914 as an entry level Porsche?

Educate me.

15. Yes, the 924 was definitely the replacement for the 914.
Edited on Sat Aug-07-10 03:36 PM by Tesha
But unlike the 914 (4 cylinder versions), the
924 was branded world-wide as a Porsche, not
as a Volkswagen.

(Only the 6-cylinder 914 was sold world-wide
as a Porsche. And equipped with the 2.0L engine
and running gear from the 911T, it was quite
a nice car. But it was discontinued in favor
of the less-expensive 914-4 fitted out with
the 2.0 litre variant of the 4-cylinder
engine and the VW components.)

But the 924 was anemic and didn't look very
muscular either. So it was pretty-quickly
replaced by the 944. The 944 was the same
basic theme but with a substantially larger
engine and a much more "muscular" external
design (the squared-off, raised rear fender
"hips", etc.)

I haven't looked at the numbers, but I think it
sold pretty well. And certainly here in the East,
far more 944s are on the road today than 914s of
any variety.

Meanwhile, the 928 (introduced along with the 924
but with a beautiful V8 engine and a much-higher
trim level) sold fairly well to the doctor/lawyer
crowd, but never really captured the 911 crowd.

The 944 then went through a series of evolutions,
getting equipped with ever-more-powerful four
cylinder powerplants until it reached the 944
S2 Turbo. That was then replaced by the 968 with
the world's second-largest-displacement four
cylinder engine and some body styling elements
(such as its headlights) that come straight from
the 928. But the 968 probably *WAS* a sales
disappointment to Porsche and it was soon replaced
by the Boxster, a slimmed-down, cost-reduced version
of the classic rear-engine "boxer" (horizontally-
opposed) 911 design.

Mr. Tesha likes his 968 Cabriolet a lot, but I
think there are days when he wishes he still had
his 914-6 go-kart. ;-)

20. Thanks for the History Lesson...
Edited on Sat Aug-07-10 10:07 PM by Steely_Dan
I actually knew some of that already...But I also learned a lot concerning the 924/944. I really appreciate it.

The 914/6 must have been a blast. In many ways I felt that the 2.0 was more than enough power for that little car...the six must have been great. Didn't they call it the 916??? I know of the VW background of the 914...Karmen design, etc. I thought it was VW's attempt at a higher performance sports car but was sold to Porsche. I also understand that Ferdanand Porsche's car of choice to run around the factory was a 914/916 hardtop...gold.

I'm sure that I will get an argument here, but it is rumored that the 914/6 (or four for that matter) actually handled better than the stock 911. This may be an exaggeration. I purposely chose the 914 2.0 from 1974. This was the last year before CA emission standards forced Porsche to add a bunch of stuff that took the power away from the car (at least that's what I've been told). The last two years (75-76) were dogs...I know...I had both.

Anyway...You got me to thinking about my days with 914's and I may have to look into getting another one. I live in the mountains in So CA and I imagine the matchbox would do well here.

27. No, the 916 was a substantially-upgraded version of the 914-6.
Edited on Sun Aug-08-10 04:51 PM by Tesha
I don't remember all the details (without
looking them up) but I think only enough
were made for homologation of the car into
certain racing classes.

In many peoples' minds (including Mr. Tesha's),
it did. Primarily because of their weight dis-
tribution, the 911s of those days had a terrible
problem with "trailing throttle oversteer"; you
lifted your foot off the throttle in a turn and
the rear end broke free, 'way oversteering the
car. Porsche was doing all sorts of tricks to
try to overcome that including splitting the
battery into two units and putting each half
of the battery into the front fenders.

They eventually overcame the problem with massive
tires in the rear and several other mods, but
meanwhile, the mid-engined 914s had nearly perfect
50/50 weight distribution and very little polar
moment. This was an advantage on the track (because
the turned very easily) but a disadvantage on winter
roads (because they spun out very easily).

The 944s and 968s have very good weight distribution
as well, but because the weight is positioned out
towards the ends, much more polar moment that the
914s had. So that "go kart" feeling is missing.

18. Not JUST a 944, but a very early one...1983 likely.
You can tell by the middle "Porsche" reflective doohicky between the rear lights. The 944 wasn't great...well, the 944 Turbo was okay. Quick for the day, handled well. But yes, overall it was crap.

5. The B*sh/Quale sticker must never see sunlight
Its pretty unusual for a cheap bumper sticker to look that fresh after a generation of exposure to the elements.
Perhaps he's a real head case and stashed away a carton of these ugly spuds so he'd always have one.

7. During Bush the Lesser, I found a "President Nixon- Now More Than Ever" bumpersticker on ebay
In small print, it cited John Mitchell and the Committee to Re-Elect the President

I'm anti-bumper sticker, but I had to put it on.

Nixon is my lifelong political nemesis, but he was miles beyond dubya in every category.

10. There was a band called "The Dick Nixons" back in1992
They had a CD called "Paint the White House Black" and the whole thing was pretty much a satirical campaign for Nixon to run for President again in 92. Funny shit.

I'll be damned... there's a MySpace page with some of their old songs on it.

These guys appear to be a 70's cover bar band. Give them credit for marketing though. Hope the Nixon estate has a good sense of humor and doesn't get all lawsuit happy over them using Tricky Dicky's not exactly pristine image.

He helped found the EPA, supported the ERA and opened relations with China.

He was obviously a pinko, girly, commie dirtbag.
