An exhibition soccer game between the L.A. Galaxy and Real Madrid attracted an estimated 85,000 soccer fans to the Rose Bowl, as expected, bringing the streets surrounding the stadium to a virtual standstill Saturday afternoon.

Police worked to funnel a sea of automobiles off of city streets and into Rose Bowl parking lots as quickly as possible, as fans scrambled to get to their seats.

"I'd say we did pretty well," Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema said. "I don't think we made everybody happy. I don't think everyone was sitting in their seats when it started."

Despite urging from both police and Rose Bowl officials to arrive two to three hours early for the massive game, a steady stream of traffic continued pouring into the Rose Bowl until well after the 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

As cars entered the Rose Bowl area, officials constantly redirected traffic to get incoming soccer fans parked as quickly as possible.

Streets immediately around the stadium were shut down during the event, and only residents were allowed access, police said.

3. Wonder why they didn't run the free bus service from downtown Pasadena to the stadium?. . .

It's what I use for Bruin football games. Park for free in the city, ride a free bus to the Bowl, get away from the stadium with minimum hassles after the game, onto the freeway and headed home with little to no troubles.

Surprised it wasn't in use for the game yesterday. Those who live in the neighborhood surrounding the stadium love it -- there's far less traffic on their streets and no fans illegally parking in the community. And the merchants in the Old Town Pasadena love it too, as it brings thousands of hungry fans into their midst immediately after the game.

6. The first time the bus ran, years ago, some capitalists got involved. . .

The busses lined up in front of a building and the line to board snaked around the building and back a couple of blocks. As we moved forward in the line, we came upon two guys in yellow jackets with "Security" written on the back, about a block from where we would board, far enough away that those directing people onto the bus couldn't see them. They were selling "tickets for the bus, only $1.00!" Of course, everyone shelled out their dollar, it seemed a great deal. We were halfway to stadium before we realized no one had ever collected the "ticket" (a cheap paper tag from a large roll, like you'd get at a school carnival). Had quite a chuckle about that, still laughing today in fact. Quite the "enterprising" criminals.

Since you didn't exercise due diligance to determine just what you needed to do to in order ride the bus, it makes sense that the Free Market and those that truly understand it just saw an opportunity to make a profit.
