That's the amount of our national budget allocated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (2009). Source: http://www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm

What could you do with another $480,000,000,000? That's half of our military budget for one year. (same source)

Maybe if we had fewer nuclear powered aircraft carriers? We have eleven; the rest of the world zero. OK, France has one they're in the process of decommissioning. Submarines? Yeah, we've got those too. Our military is bigger than the next eleven combined, ten of which are allies.

Or I guess we could get needed money from social programs, but there's less available. We spend 36% of our budget on the military machine, only 30% on social programs.

If we had to cut money, which would make the people more secure?

1. How much of the military budget provides care to our soldiers and their families?
I would consider that a good use of funds. Heaven only knows what we would do if we had to find employment for them all.

2. That's the part of the budget Bush cut, which helped me...
...convert a right-wing retired military man into a Democrat.

3. Well we keep on getting more military hurt so I imagine those costs are only going up.
I'm sure Bush was too much of a doofus to figure that out.

4. I could make a handful of contributors to my campaigns very rich
Why? Is there something else that could be done with that money? But how would I build my re-election campaign war chest?

6. I'd buy Murdoch's News Corp and slowly transition Fox and all the rest of its holdings...
into real news delivery with a liberal editorial policy.
