Proposed Law Would Put Video Cameras In Cars
Proposed Law Would Put Video Cameras In Cars

Lawmakers are considering controversial new legislation this week that would allow vehicles to be equipped with dashboard cameras to record the moments leading up to accidents.

The proposed law, AB1942, would promote safer driving habits and reduce accidents by permitting video recorders to be installed on the windshield.

The bill currently allows devices to record video, audio, how fast and which direction the vehicle is traveling, a history of where your car has been, steering and brake performance and seat belt usage.

The devices would record in a continuous loop and would only save information if there is unusual vehicle motion or a crash. They could also be capable of transmitting the information to a central control center the moment of the accident.

1. NOT a good idea. What an incredible invasion of privacy.
I mean, of course I see the benefits. But this is way too invasive.

Not going to fly...

12. a couple years ago we would not have thought we were all required to strip searches
and that naked photos of us could not be stored and possibly abused, but wtf.... big thumbs up by many, on this board.

we lost the argument on privacy.

the vehicle already has sensors. Most important who gets to see and keep the video? Who should pay for it?

7. The car owner would pay for it, if he or she wants the camera.

I have no objection to this. It's optional.

5. It's just an easy out for the insurance cos.
Edited on Mon Aug-09-10 06:31 PM by lpbk2713

"Well here it is on tape. You were clearly at fault by exceeding the speed limit, didn't give
a turn signal, didn't come to a complete stop, yadda yadda yadda. So we ain't gonna pay."

Edit: Whoever proposed this one is being greased by the insurance lobby.

8. How about slowing down traffic - period.
I wish that they could install something under the road to slow vehicle engines? I'm tired of people honking at me for doing 40 mile an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone. Raise the driving age to 18. Ban TV ads which promote fast cars. More speed cameras at secret locations (no good telling drivers where they are) then a screen on the road tells you have exceeded the speed limit and you have a $100 fine). Fines should be much higher for speeding.

As for the dashboard thingy people would just rip it out.

16. Honestly, it sounds like your a slowpoke...
...and are irritated other people are in a rush to get where they are going or just prefer to drive faster. My grandmother says the same things you just did. Determined to drive 55 in the fast lane, mostly just to make a point of being annoying. She's not in a hurry, so why should anyone else be!

Ban TV ads? MORE speed cameras? Ugh.

Speed cameras along with horrible ideas like this are the kind of thing virtually no one wants or supports, yet somehow the politicians on both sides are determined to force down our throats.

I'd prefer to ban speed cameras, red light cameras and generally stop using the police to fill government coffers with cash via what is effectively a regressive tax. Policing the roads is important, writing ticky tack tickets is not - especially when warnings could easily be given first.

28. Rather than...
Edited on Mon Aug-09-10 08:26 PM by PJPhreak
more technology to regulate what folk do with their cars how about real Driver Training?

I drove a truck for years, have many, many miles under my butt...Plain and Simple,Its Too Easy for way too many people who are not qualified to pilot an automobile,to get licensed.

Yes I said "Pilot"...It takes hundreds of hours of Classroom and Hands-On training to fly a Single Engine Airplane...but only appox 75 hours of Total training to qualify for a D.L!

When you Crash your Airplane the chances are good you will only hurt yourself and mabye your passengers.

When you crash your Car you stand a good chance that you may take out a Bunch of other people!

Most people here in the US think driving is a "Right" It's Not,Its a Privlage!

Most people here in the US have very poor Driving Skills.Trust me on this one, most folk here in the US can't bring their car back under control if it gets "Slideways" much less "Bassaakwards"

Lets Not even speak of "Winter Weather Driving"

And to keep a lot of "Issues" with Modern cars outta your life....Get One Of These...

No Computers,ECM's,Unintended Accleration,No GPS,No On-Star,Will go anywhere, run on any grade of Gas,Crazy Easy to Maintain,Crazy Easy to get parts For,AND A Blast To Drive!

Lets just say this country is really grateful that I am not in charge of the D.O.T.!

11. Here's the money quote,
"They could also be capable of transmitting the information to a central control center the moment of the accident."

And any other time as well. The police state continues to grow apace.

13. I like it !!!
I want to be able to push a button and have the video sent to that central control center and have them mail tickets to the asshole drivers in Atlanta I see on a daily basis. And when I'm driving through the mountains they can just mail the ticket to the truck drivers that ONLY pass other trucks on the steepest hill they can find.

14. Serves no one but the insurance industry.
They already have black boxes installed in cars, which few people know bout.
Now they want film of everything you do in a car?

Maybe this will lead to the demise of the auto industry.

29. Some people don't want them....but others, like...
Koua Fong Lee, the man in Minnesota who spent two years falsely imprisoned because of a fatal car crash (he was driving a Toyota)...I bet he wished every night in jail that there had been something like this in his car.

I really don't know if there's an absolute right or wrong answer to this...
