This is an animated chart of the progression of U3 unemployment rates by county between January 2007 and today.

I know I gasped when I saw it -- and I am a devoted reader of Atrios, who keeps reminding us about the seriousness of the situation, and how our elites seem to consider this par for the course.

Keep in mind that this chart is only based on U3, not U6 which includes "discouraged workers" who have stopped looking for work, "marginally attached workers", who would like to work, but have not looked for work recently, and part-time workers who want to work full time, but can't find a job, and is roughly double what you see.
