News to me. I just remember him shouting "NO!" when asked if he'd give up a little of that sweet, sweet pork he'd finagled for Alaska so America's children could eat or go to school. I took exception to the notion of his service out of uniform, as he plundered the federal Treasury to line his own pockets and impoverish his fellow citizens. I have no information on anything he may or may not have done while serving in the military, but since I don't belong to the High Church of Redemptive Violence, my default setting for a military uniform isn't "worship"; sorry.

I'm a veteran and proud of it, but there were military members who were sorry, no good SOBs while they were in the military. They weren't heroes. Serving is fine, but it doesn't make a person better than they are.

Ted Stevens was a right winger from a state with a tiny population. He had about the same constituency as all 435 congress members, many state senators, and many mayors. The simple truth is he was a sorry, sorry excuse for a man, a troglodyte who oppressed those already oppressed and daily carried water for monied interests.

It's not what you did for me in 65 years ago - or 145 years ago . . . it's what you've done for me lately.

So to say: It's sad ANY human being died is one thing: It's another to salute a Human being who spent his political career denying other human beings their equality. He did that not only in his votes - but in his heart.

Ted was a complicated person. I certainly didn't always agree with him politically, but as one caller to Shannyn Moore's show said this morning, he helped himself, for sure, but the things he did for Alaska and individual Alaskans can't be matched. He took his representation of Alaska seriously.

13. Shannyn said it was hard to explain to people that "Uncle Ted" would have been elected to any office

he chose to run for this year or next or next. When you look at his record over the years he wasn't a hard line Republican. Even the staunchest Dems in AK (like Shannyn Moore and Jeannie Devon of The Mudflats) are mourning his passing today.

I'll defer to their judgment since they knew him best. I've learned a lot about "Mr Tubes" today and it ain't all bad.

My condolences to his family and those of the other victims.
