Bennet Holds Off Romanoff in Colorado
Bennet Holds Off Romanoff in Colorado
By John McArdle, CQ-Roll Call

Appointed Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet beat back a spirited Democratic primary challenge from former state Speaker Andrew Romanoff on Tuesday and can now look forward to a tough general election this fall in a key Senate battleground state.

Bennet received 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Romanoff, and with 64 percent of precincts reporting the Associated Press had called the race.

The 8-point margin was larger than what many race watchers were expecting heading into Tuesday after a late surge by Romanoff had some wondering if Bennet — despite support from the White House and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee — might be the next incumbent to fall in a primary this cycle.

During the first 10 months of the race, it didn’t appear that the well-funded Bennet would have much trouble with Romanoff, even though Romanoff had better connections in state Democratic circles stemming from his eight years in the state legilsature. But Romanoff was able to gain traction late in the race by criticizing Bennet for taking more than $1 million in campaign contributions from special interest groups and for being the choice of the national party establishment. A Denver Post poll from late July showed Romanoff ahead by 3 points.

In the end Bennet likely benefited from Colorado’s mostly mail-in primary system, which allowed him to better leverage his large cash advantage. Forty-six of Colorado’s 64 counties held only mail-in elections this year and ballots began to be mailed out to voters July 19. Bennet, who outspent Romanoff by over $4 million during the primary, was able to flood the airwaves in the lead up and during the three week period in which voters could send in their balltos. Romanoff meanwhile was forced to mortgage his own house just to find enough money to stay on the air during the final stretch.

14. Actually, no
Rand Paul and Sharron Angle, to name two, will be on their respective ballots as the GOP nominees. Romanoff and Halter? Not so much.

22. Those two are the only two that made it
and Reid will keep his seat and we might pick up Kentucky. Rand is too crazee for even that region of the country.

3. I thought it might be closer, and even felt Andrew
had a chance to win.

I'm hoping the country sees more of Andrew Romanoff in future elections.

Meanwhile I'm for Bennet steamrolling the Puke nominee and for a big blue showing in Colorado this fall.

Recommended.

8. Thanks, me, too. We work with what we have, not what
we wish we had. I did like Romanoff, but maybe he was too new to inspire.

19. Romanoff wan't "new"
He served 8 years in the CO House, including a stint as Speaker.

He lost this race because Bennet had the big money...

politics as usual

23. too new to inspire? bennet was the one who was new, NOT romanoff.
Elected to four terms in the state legislature, Andrew Romanoff was the Speaker of the House from 2005 to 2009. He led the Democrats to their first back-to-back majorities in more than 40 years. His leadership earned national recognition, including Governing magazine’s top honor as Public Official of the Year.

a lot of people truly believed ritter should have appointed him, not that corporate pirate bennet.
