Innovation impossible in public schools says Gates

Billionaire Bill proved once again that you don't have to be all that smart to be the world's second-richest man. At the recent Techonomy conference, Gates thanked God for charter schools and wrote off any possibility of "innovation" coming from within the public school system. (The Daily Riff)

Actually it was public school teachers who created the original charter schools (God was busy that day helping Microsoft's lawyers settle their anti-trust case so the teachers asked us for help).

17. Just an anecdote.

Al & I were eating lunch last week out in a busy commercial neighborhood. We were sitting behind two Facebook employees and boy was that an eye opening conversation to overhear. There is NO room for employees to branch out even a little from their chosen role by management. Kids of 20 who have "sales" on their resume' cannot get hired for any other positions they might have experience in, they are branded that young as "sales" by management doing hiring.

The private sector is a chicken-hearted and closed in system of profit making machines. There is no room to fail to profit, therefore no room to truly innovate. I have several friends in IT, I hear the same thing all over. The initial rush is the start-up. After that takes off even a little, they are quickly courted and snapped up by the big guys who "have a certain way of doing things", as they say. After that, you're back to a cube rat.
