WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says President Barack Obama will sign a bill on Wednesday that will help U.S. manufacturers by reducing and suspending some tariffs on certain materials they must import to make their products.

Obama is scheduled to sign the bill at the White House.

The National Association of Manufacturers says it will help create jobs, cut costs for businesses and consumers and boost U.S. exports. The industry trade group says studies show that the bill would increase production by $4.6 billion and support 90,000 jobs.

The association says manufacturers rely on the tariff suspensions to get raw materials and other products that aren't readily available in the U.S.

5. That's what I was thinking - it's just more free trade stuff.

If it only applied to certain raw materials that we don't have here that would be one thing. But if it's for computer chips that could have been made here but are being made overseas so that they can pour their waste solvents into the local river, well then it seems like just another move to keep American jobs overseas as well.

It would reduce or suspend tariffs on a list of raw materials and component parts no longer produced in the United States but used by American companies to make other products.

Some examples include shoe leather used by companies such as New Balance to make running shoes and some types of computer chips used to make computers.

Seems like a positive move.

There is a certain amount of learning that takes place when you manufacture, and that leads to offshoots which creates more manufacturing. We have given that up, and we need desperately to bring those things back and MAKE them here.

Annoyingly, the media are billing it as something extraordinary. Congress pretty much passes one of these every year to tweak import/tariff law. A lot of this bill is an extension of the previous set of tweaks. Of course, a number of reductions in tariffs were set to expire at the end of 2009; this bill was intended to extend them, but it didn't pass so I think they did expire.

to Kinney shoes which had a factory about 10 miles from their farm that provided a lot of jobs in what is now a seriously depressed area economy.
No brands, barbedwire fence scars or scrapes it was premium 'raw' material for shoes and many other things.

Sounds like what we need are huge tariffs so these component parts are economic to be produced here again.

11. Yes they can and were made here at one time

Besides we need to get away from plastic bags..
I have canvas bags for shopping (they are several years old)_that were US made. Hell if i could get my hands on a couple of Pfaff sewing machines and a source for sail cloth I could make and sell them..unfortunately my Pfaff commercial sewing machine was lost in the move from Fla to NC, and I do not have the room in the house to do it in .

to export our jobs to be competitive it will not improve. We should be giving financial incentives to American manufacturing companies that hire American employees in America. Every other country in the world protects it's core manufacturing base but not America.

It really is a matter of National security.

16. This a "Buy Foreign Even Cheaper Than Ever" Act.

I guess the goal is to try to keep manufacturers in America by making it a little cheaper for them to continue operating here. And I bet it ends up costing more jobs than it saves or creates, as well as lowering the U.S.'s income.

We keep trying to fix our economy by helping businesses become more profitable and crossing our fingers that something will somehow trickle down.
