"President Obama and his White House on Wednesday were savoring one of their sweetest victories of the midterm election season, as Sen. Michael Bennet's triumph in the Colorado Democratic primary interrupted the political storyline that all incumbents are doomed by voter discontent.
Had Bennet lost to Andrew Romanoff, a plucky former Colorado House speaker who defied an admonition by White House officials to stay out of the race, the president surely would have faced a fresh round of blame for failing to rescue one of his struggling candidates. So Bennet's success Tuesday belongs not only to him, but also to Obama and the power of his brand — at least among Democrats.
Primary results across the country Tuesday — especially in Colorado and Connecticut — yielded results that, by and large, were heartening to Democrats and Republican insurgents, and potentially worrisome to establishment Republicans.
On the Democratic side, the Colorado Senate race provided something of a test run for the White House — and its expansive political apparatus — for whether voters who supported Obama in 2008 would return to support his candidates in 2010. But the effort largely was confined to Democrats, so it did little to test the theory of whether the president holds any sway with independent-leaning voters.
The president also appeared with Bennet for several fundraisers and participated in a tele-town hall meeting just last week."
