Why didn't he lash out at Republicans for blocking every single piece of legislation the Senate tried to bring up for a vote..
..There was plenty to criticize Republicans for unless he is a Republican..
If Obama allows him to get by with these comments than Gibb's was speaking on behalf of the President too.

But as to the OP.

Why should Gibbs lose his job if after redoubling his comment the day after its obvious the administration as a whole is sympathetic to what he said?

If he was expressing the President's views accurately, he apparently was doing his job.

Sounds to me like a problem with the administration, not their spokesperson.

The other day I was on the phone for a local candidate doing some phone polling for the local Democratic organization. I spoke with about a dozen people over the course of an hour about all matters from the economy (mostly), jobs, transportation, healthcare, education and endless wars. Not once did the name Robert Gibbs come up or the "professional left". Yet around here it's as if that's ALL people care or talk about. I'd bet that none of those people I spoke with knew who Robert Gibbs is or could care less.

aren't known for their political savvy. Most people barely know who is in office. This site is inhabited by political hobbyists who find entertainment in reading and discussing politics and current events. Most of the public, regardless of party affiliation, believe GWB did OK contrary to what most will tell you here....it's just the way it is...ignorance is bliss..

...or dumbed down. Mike Malloy first brought this topic up when I listened to him in the 90s and we see it in action election after election. The constant snipping, fighting, gridlock, incompetence and corruption of our political system has turned over many in our society. It's why half the voting age population doesn't even bother to show up at the polls or if they do their focus is, as you say, on the here and now.

You are spot on...ignorance is bliss for many, and unfortunately that includes many in our chattering class who view politics as a blood sport.

15. My congressional district is getting ready to elect

a person who is not from this state, who is a Washington lawyer transplant into this district, who has no ties to this state much less this district....very sad and disappointing.

An administration official does not lash out at Democrats..I know what he meant...And what he meant was that this administration can continue to cave to corporate interests and we the base should just keep quiet.
We are not done because a lot of Democratic voters just wont show up at the polls because Gibb's comment was serious enough to keep them away.

one way or the other. A press secretary's job is PR for the Administration. Alienating a portion of the party isn't acceptable. Press Secretaries by definition don't get to have an opinion, they are messengers only. He is done whether he spoke the truth or not.

12. I expect something today..

I think the first reaction was no reaction hoping the issue would just go away. Now, it is apparent it isn't going away, the next step is disagreeing and quick dismissal as an unfortunate slip of the tongue or some such. If that doesn't work, and I don't believe it will, the next step is Gibbs resignation in about a week along with a statement by Gibbs, "I can no longer effectively represent this administration due to my frustrated rant.....".

24. Even if it hadn't been about the left I'd say "fired".

If he'd gotten on TV and said "These fucking right wing Democrats are pissing me off. With all their demanding we cave to Wall Street and pull the public option. Jesus the stuff we could have gotten done without them dragging us down." I'd agree with him, but I'd still want to see him fired.

The job of the press secretary isn't to alienate part of the electorate. Certainly not a part that voted for you last time and might vote for you again.
