If there is a Democratic primary race in 2012 with a challenger who:

Takes a strong line on the economy that comports with my beliefs, or
Is an "out" atheist, or
Is an "out" civil libertarian (think ACLU, not Ron Paul)

I will vote for that person in the primary.

I would probably be concerned that supporting someone in a primary might make Obama look weaker, but

Keep in mind, there is no other way for me to vote my support of those issues except in the primary framework, because

There is one demographic I think the Democrats really need to go after, one they have largely ignored -- middle class workers who are not in a union and work in the private sector. This is a group that is currently homeless -- neither party really speaks for them -- and are increasingly desperate, disillusioned and exasperated.

The Democrats have demonstrated they have the back of union workers and, with the recent teacher "jobs bill" and aid to cash-strapped states, public sector employees. Yet those of us in the private sector watch the corporatists (and their mostly GOP buddies) take the jobs to India and to China, creating more unemployment and a costlier social safety net, while they privatize the gains from throwing those Americans out of work. And we're not seeing the Democrats do anything about it. They only seem concerned about protecting the middle class jobs that come with government jobs or a union card.

I'm not sure how much I can support Democrats at this point unless they really take a stand and start taking decisive and meaningful measures to protect middle class jobs in the non-union private sector the way they have stepped up to prop up union and public sector jobs. Whether that means harsher measures for job exports or to aid in organizing more of the private sector remains to be seen -- but either way it shows they are the party of protecting ALL middle class workers. How about it, Democrats? Do you want us or not? Are you really for the little guys, or only when they have a government job or a union card?
