Everyone in her "private circle" is a lobbyist for the prison industry.

Follow the money and you've found the rationale for a Republican cause.

I'm sorta surprised that it took MSNBC so long to finally cover the story!
Seems like Brewer's opponent would have been pushing it.

She is very good at giving credit where due, and her featuring KPHO-TV's Morgan Loew, the reporter who did the investigating and broke this story, is consistent for Rachel. And awesome.

25. This is one reason why Arpaio locks them up, instead of sending them to ICE
Sending immigration violators to ICE for deportation would be cheaper for AZ, but Sheriff Joe prefers to have them incarcerated in AZ.

32. I wonder if Morgan Loew has explored that possibility
Although Arpaio gets enough gratification for his sadistic streak that I doubt he'd need financial motivation.

33. Actually, sending them to ICE benefits Brewer's private prison cronies.
They get held in privately-run detention centers while awaiting deportation.

34. Yes, but only a small benefit
Space is limited, so only those who also are charged with serious crimes are detained. The rest (those who do not agree to voluntary deportation) are released pending immigration hearings. Those hearings are currently backlogged for at least five years, and those released are entitled to legal status in the interim. They can even obtain green cards and work legally.

And that really bugs Arpaio, and it's the other reason he doesn't want to turn them over.

35. The Feds have contracted with private prisons to expand the number of spaces
The nation's largest private prison company has partnered with the federal government to detain close to 1 million undocumented people in the past 5 years until they are deported. In the process, Corrections Corporation of America has made record profits. Critics suggest the CCA cuts corners on its detention contracts in order to increase its revenue at expense of humane conditions. Thanks to political connections and lobby spending, it dominates the industry of immigrant detention. CCA now has close to 10,000 new beds under development in anticipation of continued demand.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 09:26 PM by pinboy3niner
Thanks for the link, btw.

Ed. to add: That will hand Joe a real quandary--hand them over for private prison profit, or get to persecute, I mean prosecute them in Maricopa and enjoy seeing them suffer in Tent City?

I just hope that the message of her corruption continues to reach others far and wide. We can't afford to have people like her in power.
