Dr. Laura apologizes for saying N-word on the air
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 10:09 PM by Nikki Stone1
Interesting stuff:

LOS ANGELES – Talk radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger has issued an apology for saying the N-word several times in an on-air conversation with a caller that she said was "hypersensitive" to racism. Schlessinger said on her website Wednesday that she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.
"I articulated the N-word all the way out — more than one time," Schlessinger said in comments from the opening of her radio show that she posted on her site. "And that was wrong. I'll say it again — that was wrong."

She said she "realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset, I could not finish the show." Schlessinger said she pulled herself off the air at the end of the hour.

During the exchange on Tuesday's show, Schlessinger said the woman who called herself Jade was too sensitive for complaining that her husband's friends made racist comments about her in their home. When the woman asked if the N-word was offensive, Dr. Laura said "black guys say it all the time," then went on to repeat it several times.
Schlessinger did not direct the epithet at the woman, but said she used it to suggest how often she hears it, and that it should not automatically be cause for offense.
When the caller objected, Schlessinger replied: "Oh, then I guess you don't watch HBO or listen to any black comedians."
Schlessinger also said that if the caller did not have a sense of humor about race, she shouldn't have entered into an interracial marriage.

2. Christ, what was that woman expecting?

Has she ever listened to Dr. Laura before? Does that woman ever proffer constructive advise?

Don't get me wrong. I thought that the "advice" she doled out to that caller regarding her marriage was hideous, but it's par for the course as far as "Doctor" Schlessinger is concerned.

3. Once in a very great while in times past I would hear
snippets of this woman's radio program and was left with the conclusion that she is toxic.

I think it's kinda sad that people call her show to ask for advice in the first place, but once that stream is crossed, there's no excuse for how she treats callers.

Does anybody remember the WEST WING episode when a Schlessinger-like character gets owned by the president?

Yes. It WAS awesome.

That made a real loud point in a very effective way.

There were many great episodes of that program but that was really one of my favorites.

THANK YOU for that link.

Think if you have had an president, who was capable of telling that to the religious right wing in US?... And to work hard to get the country on its track again.. I had high hopes for Obama, as he was somewhat of a "star" in my wiew... Im was somewhat disepointed of him, but I also know he often have to shoose between the devil and the pleague to get some work ago, at all.. Not easy to be president, when your opponents are doing everything they can, to harm you, or to fight you even when you propose things, that is in reality rather intelligent and vice.. And I have to say, even the writers of the West Wing, was not able to write the facts as it have been since the early 2000s.. Imagine can get you just so far.. Many times the last decade the facts on the ground have been somewhat fantastic, more than just interesting so to say... But as a old chinese proverb say its. Wish you live in intersting times. (It can also translate to wish you live in dangrous times, as the ideogram kan translates both ways) And the last decade have indeed been intersting...

9. Incredibly, I have heard self-described progressives use the same excuse.
Some people do not grasp the concept of marginalized groups of people reclaiming ownership of epithets that have been used as weapons against them.

5. She just couldn't help it.
She said it once and just could not stop. She felt so free, so liberated. So in charge of her own bigotry. But now, back in the closet.

8. Too late, can't unring that bell.
Her rascism is out there for all to see. Give it up Dr. Schlessingr and go away.

No matter how she spins it or justifies it, ain't a happening.

12. I broke down and read the transcript
Fucking ugly.

without giving much thought, a lot of blacks voted for Obama simply 'cause he was half-black. Didn't matter what he was gonna do in office, it was a black thing.

BS.

CALLER: -- since Obama's been in office --

SCHLESSINGER: -- the point I'm trying to make --

CALLER: -- racism has come to another level that's unacceptable.

SCHLESSINGER: Yeah. We've got a black man as president, and we have more complaining about racism than ever. I mean, I think that's hilarious.

:puke:

13. hmm ... I thought the RW talking point was that blacks using the word is
hypocritical and that any white (Republican/Conservative) person using the word would be instantly crucified not only figuratively but probably literally ...

15. And She Also Thanks All Those Who Made A Stink About This...
Nothing brings someone back from irrelevancy than a headline making scandal...especially when your show has faied miserably, this is all she has left.

I didn't even know Laura the Unloved was still on the air...I'll bet others didn't either. Now they do. As the old PR axiom says..."say good, say bad...just say".
