Stephanie Miller Appreciation Thread
For those who don't know yet, radio host Stephanie Miller came out as a gay woman on her show today. I know that she and/or her producers read DU. Let's show her how much we all love her.

12. I think she saved lots of progressives' sanity back in the dark days after
the 2004 election. If it weren't for her and the mooks making me laugh every day from 9 to 12, I would have been sunk with despair. In some of our darkest moments, there are angels like Steph that make your life livable. What a gift she gave us.

I have only the best wishes for her...

16. What an emotional show! Her conversation with Right Wing Jerry did it to me
She said the call that Right Wing Jerry made about his sister committing suicide because she was gay was an influence on her decision to come out on the show today.

And my condolences to the Ecclesiastical Mook, John Fugelsang...I'm so sorry for the loss of your father.

27. Do you know if Steph's mom is still alive?
When we still got her show here in New Haven I'd hear her talk about how proper her mother was, and I wondered if she had waited so long to come out because it might alarm her. It was always clear that Steph adored her mother and visited her often...

30. Yes, her Mom's still alive and would have been on the show today but had medical issues.
Her mom is 87 and has been battling breast cancer and was going to the doctor again to see about a new mass in her breast...at least, I believe that's the case.

And Stephanie mentioned several times that her mother and her family and close friends have known for quite a while and have given her nothing but support.

33. I feel that I got to know that lady thru Steph's references to her!
I knew Steph was exaggerating her mother's ladylike image...and it seemed her mom was in on the joke.

It's nice to know that Steph's family has been supportive. She always seemed very loyal to them...and proud of her Republican dad...

Warm vibes to her mother...it must be a very hard time, facing such health issues...

76. I'm sure he's a talented guy
but his whole preachy schtick against alcohol gets old fast, especially where he continually repeats how he won't sleep with a woman if she's been drinking (as if that's the ultimate deterrent to alcohol consumption). Yes, Hal, we know you're God's ultimate gift to women, but maybe you can lay off reminding us of it every five minutes.

He's also a shameless Obama apologist, and is extremely rude and condescending to anyone who raises even the slightest criticism of Obama. He's pissed off Jim Ward a couple of times, talking down to Jim when it was clear that Hal didn't have a clue about the facts.

He annoys me, that's pretty much the long and short of it.

123. I can see your point ....
.... hadn't noticed that he pissed off Jim since they are on the same conspiracy wavelength.

The thing I like about him (not to derail the thread) is that he's totally out there about who he is and makes no apologies for it. Like him or hate him, it's for who he is.

Thanks for answering. :)

He's MUCH funnier and MUCH smarter than Hal. He's also a helluva lot less annoying.

163. See? I find him to be the lecture-y one!
He is smart and I love his knowledge of theology but wonder if he doesn't go on about it too much. It kind of takes over the show when he does it.

Either way, though, I'd listen to Hal and/or John when she's gone. I really like that they've added people in to mix it up (Aisha etc) because it changes the energy there which was needed a bit, I think.

67. Gay or straight, who cares? Here's what Steph did for me
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 07:37 PM by pink-o
I subscribed to the Stephcast a few years ago and when my mom died, listening to the hilarity really helped me heal. Steph and the Mooks are my morning sweetness--and I'm sorry for any shame, discomfort or disrespect she ever might have felt. We live in a society that worships violence yet condemns love and makes good people hide what they really are.

The absolute cornerstone of my "bleeding heart" liberalism is that I truly believe all humans need to be valued, treated as if they matter and never made to feel powerless for who or what they are. If individuals disrespect us, we can walk away, but if the discrimination is institutionalized then we have to fight it with everything we have. Steph stepped into the ring today, and I for one gotz her back as long as she needs it!

It kinda makes me wish I were gay too, so I could date her!!!

78. Why the need to date her? Can't you just be her friend?
Why, when we find someone intriguing, can't we just be friends, gay, straight, male, female?

I don't get this one.

93. You know something?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't have to acknowledge one's courage, or what have you, for coming out? First, we shouldn't care, one way or the other. Second, it's no one's business, or at least should be no one's business. It's sickening that the lunatic right has made it an issue. My kids' best friends are gay, and they couldn't care one way or the other. They are they're friends. That's all that matters. The gay part is no more or less important than their hair color. Hey, I'm not suggesting that we all hold hands and sing kumbaya, but aren't we all a bit guilty for allowing the lunatic fringe to drive the way we approach LGBT issues?

116. I'm surprised.
Honestly, I always figured she had "boy dogs" because she thought sleeping with "girl dogs" was icky.

Well, I hope this doesn't adversely affect her career. I will certainly keep listening; for all the lowbrow humor and fart jokes, her program is perhaps the most content-filled progressive show on radio, and truthfully the sexual orientation of someone two thousand miles away can't possibly affect my life. To be honest, as I am married, even if she lived next door it wouldn't affect me anyway. Had I known all along that she was gay, I'd be a fan anyway.

One hopes that her childless loser image is all fake, and that she does in fact actually sometimes get some lovin'. She deserves it as much as anyone.

What about working at the Ichy Kitty?

She's a hoot. I had recently resubscribed to the podcast. I will have to download it and listen.

158. Gets My Morning Going
Steph is my bright spot in the morning on XM167. If you can't get Steph locally, get yourself an XM radio. I bought mine just to listen to Al Franken's show on Air America. But after he left to run for the Senate, I turned to Randy, et. al. But when Steph came on in the morning, my mornings became a little bit brighter.

Congratulations Steph.

159. You can't tell your heart what to do. We miss you, Stephanie, in S. Fla. Air America blew it.
I don't care what anyone else does in their own bedroom as long as it's between consenting adults. What's much more important is the fact that Florida is trying to keep the truth from its citizens. If I wasn't experiencing it for myself, I never would've believed in 2010, in America, that our state and federal governments could manage to be so corrupt. Unfortunately, it's all about the money anymore. Especially since the Bushco coup debacle. Think about it...under Bush and the republicans we had 9/11, the truth of which we still have not gotten, 2 unfunded wars, water boarding, a surplus turned into a huge deficit, an economy on the brink of disaster, unfunded tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, only 3 million jobs created over 8 years, many going to his cronies, 750,000 jobs a month lost, social security almost privatized, corporate bought media, a huge, unsustainable housing bubble, wall street run amok, screwed veterans, all children left behind, oil and mining safeguards ignored, and the whole world hated us. I could go on for days. Under Clinton we had a surplus unseen in years, and 23 million jobs created over his 8 years. So far under Obama we've had financial reform, health reform, economy been brought back from the brink of disaster, health care for children, benefits for veterans, etc, etc, etc. I could go on for days on that, too. Just go to whitehouse.gov and get in touch with reality, people . Obama's already created more jobs in less than 2 years than Bushco in 8 and has lost less jobs consistently since taking office. Keep speaking the truth Stephanie. We need your voice. Who cares what the closed minded bigots think? I sure don't.
