Chris Dodd so opposed to Warren he "went so far as to ask a Republican" to consider the job
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 01:53 PM by 30rock
We already knew that Dodd had publicly raised questions about Elizabeth Warren’s confirmability as Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director. But The Wall Street Journal reports today that Dodd is “waging a one-man campaign to persuade the White House to nominate anybody else.”

Mr. Dodd went so far as to ask a Republican, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Chairman Sheila Bair, to consider the post.

It’s certainly strange behavior for a lame duck. And he’s parroting the line of his once and future benefactors on Wall Street: That Warren doesn’t have the “managerial experience” to lead the new agency, which after all was her brainchild.

10. Gosh so difficult to decide whether to announce this appointment
On the one hand, if Warren was appointed it would make Wall Street unhappy. And everyone simply loves Wall Street right now! But if the administration decides not to nominate her, it'll make the dirty fucking hippies who want a little oversight on the financial markets unhappy. And Wall Street will still not be the administration's friend.

The way forward is clear. Elizabeth Warren will not be nominated to direct the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Someone far friendlier to our good friends in the financial sector, who promises to look the other way when told to, will be nominated and appointed.

Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 02:11 PM by ProSense
Glenn Greenwald went out of the way to defend Dodd on the AIG payments.

Frankly, Sheila Bair is cool as the FDIC chair, and she has already made her position known:

In a interview with Forbes reporters and editors prior to her Intelligent Investing interview, Bair said that she wouldn’t be endorsing anyone for that position but says that Troubled Asset Relief Program watchdog Elizabeth Warren has the qualifications for the spot.

23. What you don't say is that Greenwald also criticized Dodd for his Countrywide loans
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 07:41 PM by 30rock
You dislike Greenwald and that's ok, because we all have the right to dislike a person. But I think we shouldn't let our differences lead us to make bad arguments against people.

1-) You did not explain why you think Greenwald was wrong about whether Dodd or the administration were favoring AIG.

2-) You did not note that in the same article, Greenwald said, "This is working because, as the White House well knows, Dodd is very politically vulnerable. He is a major target of the Right because of his genuinely questionable involvement with various banks, including his Countrywide mortgages." Thus, you attempted to create the impression that Greenwald is some sort of blind Dodd-lover.

Greenwald further said (and you didn't note this either), "I'm not defending Chris Dodd here. As I said, there are all sorts of legitimate (though still unresolved) ethical questions about Dodd's personal financial matters."

So your argument here is, "Dodd opposes Warren, therefore Dodd the AIG affair was his fault and not the Obama administration's fault," which is of course, silly logic. Reports in The Hill and the Wall Street Journal supported Greenwald's assertion, but you did not attempt to address those issues.

say the least, incorrect.

24. Dodd has always been in bed with the banksters
He supported the bills that allowed interest rates on credit cards to skyrocket, the bankruptcy bill and many more pro-bankster bills. I thought he was coming around a few years ago when he took a stand against torture, warrantless wiretapping and other constitutional issues. Any bets he ends up lobbying for the banking industry as soon as is legal?

27. Bair should have more than enough to keep her busy at the FDIC .
Hadn't the FDIC neglected to collect premiums from member banks for years? IIRC, Bair had to ask for a bailout because the FDIC ran out of funds.

Oddly Connecticut suddenly becomes very similar to South Carolina when certain issues, namely expensive war gadgetry and financial services, pop up.
