Police dog dies in hot car

A Cincinnati police specialist was placed on administrative leave this week after he left his partner, a drug dog named Juno, unattended in his vehicle during a heat wave and the animal died, police officials announced Friday.

Specialist Brian Trotta, a 13-year veteran, inadvertently left the dog behind while he rushed off to a family medical emergency on Thursday, according to a prepared statement from Cincinnati police.

The dog’s death is not the result of police-related activity and is under investigation by the department.

Trotta has been assigned to the canine unit since April 2009.

It was not clear how long the animal was alone in the car.

Further details were not released. A police spokeswoman did not immediately return a call for comment.

Temperatures have soared into the mid-to-upper 90s this week – and into the 100s with the heat index figured in, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Heat advisories have been in effect since Tuesday. On Thursday, the high temperature reached 96 but felt like more than 105 degrees with the humidity, said meteorologist Kevin Deitsch.

with that diagnosis for his child I am sure he is suffering plenty.

Love all dogs but she looks a lot like my shepherd mix. But yes, mistakes and especially under stress happen. I can't condemn anymore anyone as an idiot after reading this WPost Pulitzer winning story.

in a thread a few weeks ago. Here it is in your article, plain as day. The reason young children are left in the car more often these days than ever before. We need to change the child/baby seat rules back to what they were....

It happens that way somewhere in the United States 15 to 25 times a year, parceled out through the spring, summer and early fall. The season is almost upon us.

Two decades ago, this was relatively rare. But in the early 1990s, car-safety experts declared that passenger-side front airbags could kill children, and they recommended that child seats be moved to the back of the car; then, for even more safety for the very young, that the baby seats be pivoted to face the rear. If few foresaw the tragic consequence of the lessened visibility of the child . . . well, who can blame them? What kind of person forgets a baby?

Humans make mistakes sometimes, and the price is often paid by innocent victims. I know the weather at Rainbow Bridge is sunny but cool, I'm sorry you weren't able to live out your life the way you should have.
