Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' comments irritate Nancy Pelosi but won't get him ousted

Robert Gibbs' tart tongue has managed to irritate Nancy Pelosi and enrage the Democratic left wing, but don't look for the White House to slap a muzzle on its mouthpiece.

When Gibbs last week blasted the "professional left" and said they "ought to be drug-tested," he was just saying aloud what others in the West Wing mutter: liberal pundits and activists who zing President Obama on cable news shows aren't giving him credit for keeping his campaign promises.

"My dad always told me that my mouth would get me into trouble," Gibbs told the Daily News in an interview where he made no apologies, but insisted he wasn't out to anger longtime allies.

He's not in trouble. The administration's witty but pugnacious press secretary isn't just a member of Obama's tight circle of advisers, he's also the President's close friend.

If anything, Gibbs remains on track to move to the next level, senior adviser to the President, several sources told The News. "Robert will see this through," said a knowledgeable White House aide with a grin. "He won't leave during the first term. He's loyal."

3. There are a lot of people who just can't admit to themselves that Gibbs really does reflect the...

...opinion of the president. He does.

That's where we're at right now. I personally don't think that's a great place to be, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pretend that a helpless Obama's viewpoints are being distorted by a dominant Gibbs. It's just preposterous.

After Gibbs' comments, during all that backlash which included calls for Gibbs resignation, the truest comments (especially after the White House confirmed this was not a gaffe) were "Why? This represents the opinion of the president."

Some people just cannot accept that, because I guess it would be too much to wrap their heads around. I dunno.

If he does get "moved up", he'll certainly be in a position for that to happen, alright!

I understand that "distancing" themselves from the left is in the past, and openly attacking is the new game.

I don't know what this lack of wisdom and ethics is supposed to gain them.

8. He's being kicked upstairs

He clearly has a "problem" of slipping into saying what the President feels, which this Administration does not like. We'll have a new, less-candid Press Secretary but Gibbs will continue planning lovely things (like his 2004 ad attacking Dean and praising Bush).
