NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Federal officials and local housing advocates have hailed a project in North Kingstown to redevelop former Navy housing into environmentally friendly affordable homes for formerly homeless families.

A celebration was held Monday for the development, called Kingstown Crossings I.

Rhode Island Housing, which provided $8.6 million for the project, says it will include 58 energy- and water-efficient units within walking distance of child care, recreation areas, transportation and jobs.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Later, plans call for building 46 more units at the site. The project is also funded by federal money and private sources.

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said the development will breathe new life into the neighborhood and will be a huge upgrade for the community.

unhappycamper comment: The military aren't exactly stewards of the environment. They tend to fuck up stuff like ground water and soil.

I certainly hope that proper environmental studies were done before this housing was built.
