I'm going to the dentist today, because of you guys.
For background-
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8949586

http://www.wishadoo.org/welcome.php/

(I'd like to thank Skinner and the admins of DU for allowing Wishadoo to post this fund raiser.)

Today, at 2pm PST I actual have an appointment with a real dentist that is going to start me down the road to smiling, to working again and to living my life again. I would not be doing this without the kindness of so many of you, and I can't began to know how to thank you all, but I'm going to try by giving a little advice at the end of this post.

First a little background-

I've seen people talking of revolution, change, a new way forward, another kinder America. I've found it here at DU and through the revolutionaries at an amazing site called Wishiadoo.

It's a revolution of kindness and giving and I have to say I never thought I'd be joining the revolution quite like this, but now I'm a happy, and soon to be smiling soldier.

And I'm not alone. And neither are you. The revolution, for me, started when I learned there is no shame in asking and you get no help without reaching out. A kind and smart DUer, OneGrassRoot knew of the problem with my teeth -lol, that would be lack of teeth- and encouraged me to come forward with my needs. And encouraged, and encouraged. I learned something, OneGrassRoot does not take no for an answer, and once this bold DUer has something in her mind, there is no changing it or stopping her. For that, I'm more than grateful.

It started with a post I made on the wishlist section at a brain child called Wishadoo started by OneGrassRoot and her partner, and after a week of working with a fund raising group, and hours of behind the scenes work culminated in a post on Sunday morning from OneGrassRoot asking you guys for help. Help for me, imagine that. OGR set the fund raising page up for a month of fund raising and we set a modest goal of 900 dollars, just 100 over the cost of the most basic dentures.

In a little more than one hour we exceeded that goal by a few hundred dollars. I give full credit to OGR, the fine site that is Wishadoo, and the kindness of strangers that have been my friends for a few years now. To say I'm humbled and happy is an understatement of massive proportions. I've gotten some sage advice from some very smart people that have been in my shoes, and becaue of your and their generosity I'll be seeing a real dentist today that will get me on the road to a smile, and with a smile, the first real employment I've had in more than 2 years.

You guys fired the first shots of kindness in a revolution of giving. I wonder if you guys will ever know what heroes you are to me.

Thank you is not enough, so I'll give you a pledge beyond the thank you. I will pay it forward by making sure I help others, by being an advocate for those that can't or won't advocate for themselves. And that work starts now.

In that wonderful thread where so many came forward to help and send good wishes there were many that spoke of help they needed and have not asked for. I saw smiles to be fixed and other people to help. Here's the kicker, these people were reaching out to help me. Imagine that!

So this is where I come to the advice portion of this long winded deceleration of appreciation. I'm telling you, all of you that need it, to ask for help. Trust me, after that first step, that hardest step, everything starts to fall into place. I've never been one to ask, and old dogs don't easily learn new tricks, but with a little pushing, I did ask and it's completely changed my perspective.

Now it's time for you to ask. What do you need? A smile? A job? Do you need just that little push to get you over that hump most of us are facing? Just ask and you may be surprised by the number of people that want to help.

PM me or OneGrassRoot if there is something you need, we'll try to help. Really, it's not a big deal once you are over that silly hump of stubbornness. Everyone needs a hand up sometimes and many of us don't have family and friends around to offer that help, so let your friends in that other community help. Let us help.

I can't begin to tell you all what this means to me, and thank you will never be enough, so again, know my life is now about paying this forward.

I'll leave with a few words that keep running around in my head, I don't know what or who to attribute them to, but they make sense now to me more than ever.

Take just what you need, but take all you need.

10. OneGrassRoot is am amazing person
And so are you Rocky.

This is truly the beginning of a new time.

If we, the big we, the human race, are to survive we must give full realization to the fact that we are all one. We are part of a whole. No dogma, no doctrine, beyond words, we are biologically one whole organism. Each person unique and needed for our evolution to move forward.

And it starts with one person saying, I need your help. I need you... I need all of you cause we're on this bus together.

12. I am so happy for you, and this OP is wonderful
A great part of my life has been spent on the subject of help, both the offering of help and the acceptance, both elements are necessary to our evolution. For many it is easier to help than to be helped, but both parts of that exchange are equal blessings.
I'm hearing a voice say 15 minutes to curtain. It keeps running around in my head. Opening night. Imagine. The best is yet to be.

15. Okay, DUers....let's do it! Round Two....ding, ding, ding...

Like Rocky said, IT STARTS BY ASKING. :)

PLEASE, join Wishadoo! and post what you need or what another you know needs (who gives permission to do so; many won't even have access to the Internet). Please don't assume it's impossible...that your need can't be met. I do ask you to enter with an open heart and no expectation. All manner of good is then possible.

http://www.wishadoo.com/listing/

Then let's see what can be done about those needs and dreams. The more who gather....

It's not always monetary (if it is, we know how to do it now a la Rocky's wish ;)). Sometimes it's advice, a connection, our time, something we have on hand that we don't need any more.

Direct connections. A new type of Community -- online and real world.

Rocky is a wayshower here, and I AM SO PROFOUNDLY GRATEFUL TO YOU, ROCKY. I'm so honored to be witness to the next leg of your journey. AND I'M EQUALLY GRATEFUL FOR THE DUERS who walked through this door of kindness and compassion.

50. I've got that on my agenda...

A Wishadoo "ambassador" program. A Robin Hood program of sorts, to (as I so delicately say) "balance this shit out."

;)

Wealthy people adopting their communities (rather than Bank of America sponsoring a new stadium, a wealthy community member can do it; forget the write-off, just do the right thing); wealthy school districts adopting struggling districts, etc., etc.

I hear you!

:hi:

51. Count me in
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 06:11 PM by sandnsea
I've suggested that around here before. I think PTA's from wealthier districts need to mentor the PTA's in poorer neighboring districts too. Teach parents how and when to be advocates. I've met parents who don't know they're supposed to do anything except send their kids to school, go to a PTC, and then yell at their child if they don't get good grades. They were stunned when I said they could call the teacher every week and ask for updates and extra help.

Also, do you know about eScript? I divide mine between my current school and my previous district.

Also on edit..

What about an online buddy program between schools. I've seen things where schools do projects online together and think that is a great way to break down cultural barriers. But what about a study program, where kids sign up to study with kids from other school districts?

53. I just created a group to brainstorm about these types of things...

(note that we're still tweaking the Groups feature -- including making the font much bigger! -- and a few other things at Wishadoo)

I just created a group for brainstorming about Education issues; I'm creating groups as the topics of discussion arise in my interactions.

I anticipate there will be hundreds of Wishadoo groups, focused on geographic region, issues, outside groups creating a Wishadoo group (like companies and organizations having Facebook pages), etc.

I don't know about anyone else, but I need more organization, as I think ADD is setting in as I get older. :(

So, having groups to brainstorm about the various needs and issues we're facing as a society will hopefully help others as much as it helps me.

I invite you to post your thoughts (like the PTA idea above) for further discussion here:

also, I had gotten on that site to contribute and saw that by then they were way over the amount you'd needed. I'd exchanged emails with "gh"(same person as onegrassroot?) as to whether you needed some more as a cushion or for more work if you were just going for the bare minimum that you needed. I'd be happy to still contribute if more would be of help to you, and if not, as I told "gh", I will pledge to give the same amount to a local charity. I hope "gh" or you or someone will keep me (us) updated as to whether you could use a little more help, or if you're good. Just to know where to send this donation...

59. I am so excited for you asdjrocky.
It is more than a set of pearly whites, it is confidence and a certain peace and i am very glad for you. I suspect when you smile, in a few months time, that people will see more than just your new teeth. They will see the reflection of this experience glowing in your countenance. It's a beautiful thing.

60. We can fight here at times with each other (du'ers in general) but when it comes to helping
we put aside those things. Folks here have helped me out here during my bad times - and I have a lot of paying forward to do. I was more than eager to help out, sad it was so little this week (and I plan on donating to DU come Friday night as well).

I wish we had a fund where folks could put a little each week and build up a good amount to help others, a general fund of sorts.

And when it comes to dentistry - I know how it goes. I had all my upper teeth pulled, insurance screw up, then I moved to CA, and I still don't have dentures :) But damn I don't have the pain anymore.

Glad you are getting the needed care!

65. NICE ONE!
Dammit, we NEED our teeth!

Very happy for you, Rocky. By now you've had your first appointment and are no doubt on Cloud 9.
But one little note before your treatments are complete: try some nitrous oxide - trust me, it's very, very good especially if you're a bit dental phobic.

69. Thank you asdjrocky and onegrassroots
for giving us (me) the opportunity to relish the thrill of helping. And you know, It was a huge rush to be one little cog in something that needed a concerted effort to work. It really felt great!. Oh yeah, this is....should be... about you. Congrats on working towards that smile and all that it brings and all that it allows.
