A question about Jury Duty fairness

In my state if you are a State Worker and get called for Jury Duty you receive full pay for time spent, however if you work for a Private firm you receive $25. a day. While I do not begrudge the State worker their pay I do question the fairness of it.

It depends on the employer, of course.

In Ohio, when I served on jury duty, I continued to receive my salary for those days. Plus, I think I received $5 from the county for "parking and other costs".

In the case you're citing, the employee is being paid by their employer, a department of the state.

the difference between what the court pays and my regular salary. I guess since the courts budget comes from either the state or city, they are basically doing the same thing.

Just as when a Federal worker is called to jury duty they are paid by their employer for the day just as if they had been at their job because they are indeed at their job of serving the public. However they do not get paid by the Court for their service.

Way back in the days that I got sick days, I occasionally applied my sick days to jury duty when I was called upon. I think the compensation for jury duty is insanely low. It's been roughly the same for decades; if you think about it, you'll realize that the time when it was set, it was roughly eight hours pay at minimum wage. Today, that would be ninety bucks in most states. Getting called for jury duty shouldn't scare people, but I'm usually concerned about being able to afford missing work for a few days.

Rather than trying to drag everybody down to the lowest common denominator, perhaps we should try lifting up everybody else to the plateau instead. What a novel concept.
