7. I'm wondering...

The law used to prosecute the asshole was intended to stop constituents from sending offensive communications to their elected officials rather than to protect visible minorities and other potentially marginalised groups from hate crimes and threats of genocide. Maybe the judge considered the asshole's excuse a load of shit but used it as a shortcut to avoid prosecuting someone under a law that, broadly speaking, is unjust and is a form of unreasonable censorship.

The only hole in my analysis is that it's fucking Queensland, and there's a lot of right-wing nutters there.

I have been living here for almost 4 years now. I have worked for 3 different companies. I have heard things in the office and on the flight line that would get an entire company into sensitivity training in the US. One time I saw one white Aussie walk into an office full of 20-30 people and yell over the background noise to another white Aussie "What up n****r". My gut twisted into knots, but as I looked around not one of my coworkers batted an eye.
