"Freedom of religion is a bedrock principle of our democracy," Hall, D-Dover Plains, said in a prepared statement. "I think honoring those killed on Sept. 11 and showing sensitivity to their families, it would be best if the center were built at a different location."

How is accepting religious intolorance "showing sensitivity" to 9-11 families?

1. Hall knows better but it's a swing district and ...
... apparently this "issue".... as silly as it is.... is resonating amongst the booboisie. I'm less surprised by Hall than I am by Dean and others who either are not running for anything right now or are in safe districts.... yet who are embarrassingly silent on the matter or babbling inanely about "showing respect for 9-11 families".

It is not a complicated issue. We should be able to communicate simple constitutional principles to our fellow Americans.... not to mention the simple logic involved in the fact that because all of the 9-11 hijackers were muslims, it does NOT follow that all , most, or even a significant minority of muslims support the actions of the hijackers.

If we are unable to persuade people on this issue there is little hope of persuading them of anything more complicated. ( Which would be ANYTHING.)
